Chapter 11: The Nightmare Returns
"Lilia, where have you been?" Paul demanded. He was standing outside the front entrance of the hotel, when her and Nick had skated up.
"I was out having some fun. It's only six thirty, you weren't supposed to be back until seven, so I thought I'd take advantage of the time to myself. How was your promos?" Lilia explained breathlessly, kissing her friend on the cheek in welcome.
"They were fine. Baby, where's my car?" Paul asked.
"It's in the parking lot," she answered as if nothing could be more simple.
"Why did you leave it here?"
"The purpose of roller blading is to actually roller blade. The car defeated my purpose. Anyway, we had fun, didn't we Carter?" Lilia asked.
"You're just a clumsy fool, Lily. Between keeping you out of trouble and trying to slow down enough for you to keep up, I'm exhausted," he said, his eyes sparkling as he watched her get revved up for another round.
"Slow down so that I could keep up? My god man, are you insane? If anyone was slowing down..." she started again. Nick rolled his eyes, and skated away from her, into the parking lot. She took after him, continuing her lecture.
As Paul watched this, he was amazed. He had never seen Lilia so fired up with anyone. She had always been submissive and accepting. If anyone challenged her, she'd back down. But watching her tear after Nick, that was not the Lilia that they had left a year and a half ago. It wasn't even the same Lilia they had seen when she arrived. He had to admit, he liked what he was seeing.
"Hey Nick, whenever she's done beating your ass, let her know that we're going to be hanging out in Sandy's room tonight, 'kay?" Paul called. Lilia paused for a moment in her pursuit of Nick and waved to Paul, before continuing.
About forty minutes later, Lilia showed up at Sandy's door, freshly showered, changed and beautifully tanned from her day out in the sun. Everyone greeted her as she entered the room. She said hello to everyone, beat Damon out of a spot on the bed and told them all about her adventures roller blading.
She was in the middle of retelling her story when another knock was heard at the door. Sandy jumped up and answered it, and showed Howie and Kevin in. Jacki, who was sitting in a corner sulking, perked up immediately when they entered the room. They trailed in and found places to sit in. Sandy flicked through the channels then stopped dead when she saw what was playing on MTV. She squealed. Everyone, startled, looked to the screen to see what the problem was.
"Our video! They're playing our video!" she screeched. Paul and Damon were instantly at her side, hugging her and watching in amazement as they saw their faces and heard their song being played. Jacki joined in and soon they were a hysterical heap of overly happy people. Lilia hung back for a few minutes, but when they had calmed down enough, she pushed her way into the crowd. She grabbed Paul from behind and hugged him fiercely. Damon and Sandy caught sight of her, and Lilia was instantly the center of a crushing group hug.
"Let me breath people!" she cried. They allowed her some space to breath, and then started talking all at the same time.
"Baby, can you believe it? Who would've thought that we'd be on MTV when we first started out!" Sandy exclaimed.
"Wow, I can't believe it, I'm so shocked," Damon said, dazed expression on his face.
"Baby, we owe a lot of this to you," Paul said, breaking in.
"You're so right Paul. We owe so much to you Baby, how can we ever repay you?" Sandy said. Lilia was a little flustered.
"Guys, you don't. This is all of you," she started to say, when she noticed that someone had turned off the television. It had been Jacki and now she was standing in front of it, arms crossed and a sour expression on her face.
"For once, Lilia, I have to agree with you. This is all us, there is none of you in this song," she said stonily.
"Jacki-"
"No, you listen to me. I am so sick and tired of hearing about the great Lilia! What did she ever do that was so great? She dropped you guys flat. You're lucky that I felt sorry for you and took up where she left off," Jacki said, her volume rising as she grew more emotional.
"Jacki, you know it wasn't like that. And you're sick of me? What have I ever done to you? You, on the other hand, have been a pain in my side ever since I got here, with your snide little comments, and you're ever-so-innocent pushing, trying to pretend that you don't know why it would upset me! I don't know what you're problem is, but I for one am sick and tired of your self-centeredness and your 'holier than thou' attitude!" Lilia yelled. Jacki narrowed her eyes as she fought for a response.
"At least I'm not responsible for my fiance's death," she said, calmly, coldly, without a hint of remorse. Lilia's blood ran cold. She froze completely, searching the face that was cold with hatred. With her words everything came back. The sorrow, the guilt. The nightmare. She stood there, eyes filling with desperate tears. She saw the stunned faces of her best friends, the intensity of the situation mirrored in the faces of those she hardly knew. Shaking violently, gasping for air, she turned and bolted for the door.
