Chapter 14: Something You Never Forget

Andrew felt Carrie stiffen as he introduced her, and he glanced at her face. She had turned white, and was looking terrified. Confused, he glanced at the three strangers in front of them, and they had the same mixture mirrored in their own faces. There was something he was missing.

Carrie was starting at the blond man, who looked as though he has been about to leave in the car. Andrew followed her gaze, and it was locked on him. And Nick was staring straight back at her.

"Kay?" he whispered, questioningly. He looked as though he were talking to a ghost. Nick took a step forward, and Carrie drew back from the group of people staring at her.

"My name is Carrie," she said softly, her lower lip trembling.

"Cairo, is it really you?" the woman asked, running down the steps of the porch. Carrie took another step forward.

"My name is Carrie," she said, louder.

"Cairo, Carrie - I don't care what you call yourself, just as long as it's you!" Lacey exclaimed, pulling her into a hug. Carrie stood frozen as she was hugged, her eyes still locked on Nick's.

"Two years! It's been two years! Are you okay? What have you done, what have you seen, who have you met? You could have called, let me know that you were alright," Lacey was stammering, her arms still on her shoulders. Carrie wouldn't meet her eyes; they were focused on Nick.

The same eyes she remembered from that one memory of her past life. The same face. But his expression - it was the same as the day that she left. Past was colliding with the past, transposing itself onto the future, leaving her shaken.

"What's going on here?" Andrew asked, confused. A moment of silence followed. Something flashed in Nick's eyes - a moment of hope, a breathless flash of faith. It hurt her to see it, as it always had.

"Nothing, Andrew. I think these people have me mistaken for someone else," Carrie answered finally. She watched Nick nod slowly, as if understanding what she meant, and then he sat back down in the car. She closed her eyes for a moment, and turned to walk away.

"We're still your family, Carrie. We always have been. It's one of those things you can never forget," Brian called after her, breaking his silence. Carrie turned around, took one look at Lacey and Brian, and took off running.
