Chapter 8: Holiday Planning

Lacey looked to her husband, an expression of great concern on her face. They had spent all of ten minutes at Nick's apartment in the city before they could already tell that things with him had gone downhill. He was so withdrawn and sullen, a far cry from the persona that had assumed him for almost 5 months.

"Nicky, honey, what happened?" Lacey asked softly, interrupting the one sided conversation that Brian was trying to maintain with him. He turned to her, and met her eyes, and just shook her head.

"Don't give me that, you little shit, because I'm not going to buy it! Now, tell me that the hell is bothering you or else I'm leaving and never coming back!" she said, standing up, her eyes blazing.

"Lacey!" Brian warned.

"No, Brian, she's got a point. I have to move past it, but something keeps pulling me back," Nick sighed. Lacey's stern expression softened as her heart sunk with the realization that he was talking about Cairo.

"Nick…"

"No, Lacey, I've heard the lectures, all of them! Don't you understand? I was almost at the point where I could let go of what might have been, and then with the mere mention of the fact that she was seen in New York, I hit bottom again! When is this going to stop for me?" Nick demanded.

"Honey, it's hard to loose someone you love. It leaves you in a bad place. With you, it's harder, because you can still play the 'what if' game, because you're holding on to the small hope that she may get her memory back."

"Nick, if I were you, I wouldn't give up on the hope. But I would move on, because you can't live your whole life holding your breath, waiting for a miracle to happen," Brian said.

"I understand that. And I was there…but some part of me will never give up, you know? And I guess I'm going to have to live with the fact that part of me will always be waiting, and learn how to live with it."

"That's right, Nick. You have it. And you know we're here for you, right?"

"Of course, Lacey."

"Now, since that's out of the way…Brian, Kevin, Anna and I are all going to get the kids together and take a trip for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We're going to do the old fashioned New England Thanksgiving on this island we found out about, and just hang about there for awhile. It's going to be so…breathtaking. We gotta get the kids to experience snow sooner or later, right Brian?" she asked, smiling.

"And you need me to tag along so you have a babysitter," Nick laughed.

"Naturally. It'll be fun, relaxing, get away from all this Florida sunshine," she laughed.

"Can I bring my dog?" Nick asked.

"As long as you accompany him along with us, then it'll be fine. Oh Nick, it's going to be so much fun! You're going to love Fletcher's Cove, I swear!" Lacey promised.
