Chapter 13: Fatal Words

She found her sister in the ICU waiting room. Trista ran to her and tried to hug her but Cairo pushed her away. Trista, looking stunned, sat in a hard plastic chair and sulked.

"Can I see him?" Cairo asked. She turned helplessly to her mom who had insisted on accompanying her.

"I'll go find out," he mom said and walked towards the nurse's station.

"Carrie, please don't look at me like that. Your face is so blank; you're like a stone. I can't bare that!" her sister whined.

"What happened to Brad?" Cairo said coldly, ignoring her sister's plea.

"He got drunk. Really really drunk. Then he insisted on going to see you and on driving. I tried to stop him, I really did. But he was just so drunk; I didn't know what he'd do to me, so I let him drive. Cairo, he could have avoided the other car. I know he could have. But it was like he wanted to hit it. And now I don't know what's going to happen," Trista said looking down.

"Cairo, you can see him," her mother said. Cairo turned away from her sister and followed her mother down the hall.

"I'd better warn you, he is in really bad shape. His…his spinal chord was broken. They're going to do tests tomorrow morning to see if it's permanent," the nurse who accompanied them down the hall said.

"Go in," the nurse said, her and her mother pausing at the door. Cairo closed her eyes and prayed for strength because she had none left, and walked in the door.

Brad was lying there motionless, hooked up to all sorts of machines, with tubes going into his arms. A heart monitor beeped monotonously, seemingly bored with it's steady beat. She walked over to the Brad's sleeping form and stood over him.

"You bastard," she whispered. "How could you do this? It's not bad enough that you have to sleep with my sister for over a year while stringing me along, just when I find out you go and try to kill yourself. Don't try to deny that, I know and you know that that is what you were trying to do."

"Why? That's all I want to know. What did I do that was so bad that you had to go to my sister? And why, of all people, my sister?" she asked. She stared down at his face; once the sight of which would her smile. Now she found only loathing. She picked up his limp had and kissed it.

"I guess I knew all along that I came back here to say goodbye to you. So goodbye Brad," she said, laying his hand back down and walking towards the exit.

Suddenly the beeping stopped and became one continuous shrill beep. Cairo screamed for help and a flood of nurses came streaming in. Cairo just watched, horrified, losing touch with reality. It was the most unreal moments of Cairo's life and all she could do is watch.
And suddenly the noise stopped. The beeping had stopped, the nurses and doctors where hanging their heads. One came up to her and said the fatal words.

"I'm really sorry."
