Chapter 25: Wedding Plans and Cheap Shots
"Kay! Open up, girl! We're here!" Lacey bellowed outside of Cairo's front door. Cairo laughed and ran to let her in.
"Kay! Wow, you're looking better!" Lacey exclaimed, recalling the last time she had seen Cairo, which was right after Brad died.
"It's the Florida sunshine, what can I say? It invigorates you," she said, ushering Lacey and Robbie in. "What'd you do to your parents?"
"You know how funny they can be about certain things. They're all, 'we don't want to impose on poor Carrie, the poor dear. She has had enough to deal with without us'. Who know with old people? And Rob's parent's just followed suit so that they didn't look foolish. They're at a hotel," she said, breathlessly. She walked into Cairo's living like she owned the place and turned around, admiring the view.
"No wonder you don't like to leave this place! This is a dream house, Kay! Wow, why didn't you tell me how set you are down here? I would have moved here myself!" she exclaimed, walking over to the backdoor. "Oh my god, it's absolutely perfect! You were so right, Kay!"
"I told you it was fabulous down here! How was your flight?" she questioned, motioning for them to sit down.
"It was great, except for the fact that you know my mother…she complained the whole way, dad got mad, Rob's parents were getting skeptical and we got headaches. Then Rob and I switched our seats with someone near the back of the plane, then had a wonderful, headache free flight," Lacey gushed.
"Yeah. But it's great that our parents are tolerating each other for our sake, honey," Rob said, making Cairo remember the fact that their parents couldn't stand one another.
"It's just good for us that they're not staying under one roof. We should have eloped," Lacey said. Rob nodded vigorously.
"But then I would have to kill you guys," Cairo said.
"So, where's the next door neighbor? Does he realize that I'm still pissed that he didn't tell me who he was? Neil…should have known that that was a fake name, it didn't suit him very well," Lacey said.
"Yeah, really. Nick definitely suits him. So, let's just go over what's going to happen Thursday," Cairo said.
"Well, my parents show up in the morning. While the girls go out to get our hair done and stuff, the guys are going to pick up all the food and stuff for it. You've already made the arrangements, right?" Lacey asked nervously.
"Yeah, of course," Cairo reassured her nervous friend.
"And then we come back and double check everything is ready, and then we get ready. The photographer is coming around 4, and the ceremony is set for 4 and then we eat and party for the rest of the day," Robbie said.
"Well, you sound all set. Let me see your dress, Lacey!" Cairo said, her eyes widening.
"Okay, come with me. Robbie, you gotta stay down here, because it's bad luck otherwise," Lacey said, grabbing her bag and racing up the stairs.
Once they were up in the spare bedroom, Lacey unzipped the bag and carefully lifted out her dress for Cairo to admire.
It wasn't a big pouffy wedding dress like the ones that she had always had her heart set on. It was very simple, a tight bodice with spaghetti straps that led into a full satin skirt. It was simple and elegant and totally Lacey.
"Wow, it's gorgeous, Lacey. His eyes are going to pop out of his head when he sees you in it," Cairo commented, running her fingers over the soft satin.
"And now, your dress," Lacey said, eyes glinting mischievously. She pulled out a sapphire blue, satin dress. It was absolutely beautiful. And totally not Cairo's style.
"Lacey…I…I will not be caught dead in that dress!" Cairo exclaimed. Her best friend, knowing full well what to expect, laughed at Cairo's predictable reaction.
"Kay, it's your color. It's not your style, I grant you that, but it'll look fabulous on you, so quit your complaining. This color was made for you and it's my wedding so you're wearing. Show off your body for once, Kay!" Lacey said, dancing the dress in front of Cairo as she spoke, enticing Cairo.
"Lacey, it's gorgeous. But…I'll feel like a Barbie Doll in that thing. You know, you're right...you should have eloped!" she said, furrowing her brow. The entire back of the dress is cut out! I can't wear that! she thought to herself.
"You will wear it and enjoy it. Hey, is that your doorbell?" Lacey asked curiously, and when Cairo nodded, she flung the dress at her and raced down the stairs.
"Lacey, what are you doing?" she said, following her to the door. Lacey stood there greeting Nick…and Veronica.
"Neil. So we meet again. What do you have to say for yourself?" Lacey asked, attempting to be intimidating but the laughter in her voice didn't help, leaning casually against the door frame.
"I plead insanity," his easy response was.
"That's what they all say. But, hey? Who am I to judge the pleas of an insane man?" she said, moving, allowing him entry. He walked in and nodded hello to Cairo, with Veronica trailing him.
"Nicky, why did she call you Neil?" Veronica's annoying voice screeched.
"I told you about how I met Kay and her, remember? She didn't know until after the cruise who I was, and this is the first time that I've seen her," he said, exasperated.
"Oh yeah, that little story. So, you're getting married?" Veronica, looking towards Robbie and Lacey who were sitting together on the couch.
"Yeah, that's us," they said in unison, then collapsed into giggles.
"How quaint. But don't you feel the age difference is an issue?" Veronica asked innocently.
"Age difference?" Lacey said, giving Veronica some of her attitude.
"Yeah, I mean, you are a lot older than him, aren't you?" she inquired.
"No, actually Lacey is a few years younger than me," Rob said spitting out his words.
"Oh, I just thought that…well, since Lacey looks so much older than you…I just assumed," Veronica said, all apologetic.
"Yeah, whatever. So, how's life been treating you, Nick?" Lacey asked, pointedly ignoring Veronica.
"Not bad, Lacey. Few things aren't going quite as I expected, but I can't complain," he said, a silent message passing between Nick and her, that caused Cairo to wonder what the hell they were talking about.
