Chapter 26: Take Care of My "Sister"

Cairo ran her newly manicured nails over the fine silk of her dress. Despite the fact that she was incredibly uncomfortable in the revealing dress, it was fabulous.

It was Lacey's wedding day. In less than an hour, her best friend would be a "batchelorette" no more. Poor Lacey was running around crazily.

"Lacey, calm down. Everything is done. The minister is here, the photographer is here, the parents are here, our cousin and other family. Everyone is here, and everything is being looked after. You, on the other hand, still have to get your veil on and be fawned over by your mother. So sit down, and let me attach that thing to your head and try to calm down," Cairo said, grabbing Lacey just as she was about to go through another flight around the house.

"Okay, sitting down would be good. My hair is hurting my head," she commented, when Cairo sat her down at a bureau and a mirror so she could put her veil on. Lacey's hair was piled on top of her hair, twisted with bits of babies breath. Cairo struggled for a few minutes until she finally attached the veil to the clips that were embedded deep within Lacey's hair.

"There. My big sister, getting married," Cairo said, beaming proudly at the reflection of the blushing bride in front of her.

"Oh, no cute comments, don't make me cry!" Lacey pleaded. She had already cried over the flowers and at the hair dressers.

"Okay, okay. Well, shall you make your appearance downstairs?" Cairo asked. Lacey nodded and they walked down together, to a bustling room. Suddenly everyone stopped when they saw her and they all oohed collectively at Lacey's appearance.

Cairo escaped the pandemonium outside and walked outside, down to the sand where they were planning on holding the ceremony. She found Rob out there waiting anxiously to begin.

"I can't wait, Carrie. Is she almost done getting ready? What does she look like? Never mind, she'll be beautiful," he said, sounding dreamy.

"Yeah. Anyway, this is my opportunity to say, you do anything to screw this up, I'll hunt you down and murder you. But other than that, congratulations, have a good time and good luck," Cairo said matter-of-factly.

"Yeah. Don't worry Carrie. She owns me. I've been whipped since the second I saw her," Robbie reassured her. Cairo smiled.

"It goes both ways, Robbie. We you guys first broke up, she tried hard to hold down another serious relationship, but she never could. She could never replace you," Cairo said, thinking of all the frivolous relationships that Lacey had had.

"I want to thank you, Carrie, for everything you've done for us and our wedding. It means a lot to both of us," he said, hugging her.

"Don't make me cry, I have to save it all for the ceremony," Cairo said.

* * * *

It was a breathtaking picture. The red-glow of the setting sun, sparkling off the waters as their back drop, and the love radiating from Lacey and Robbie as they said their vows. It was just beautiful, and Cairo kept her promise to Robbie and cried.

After being pronounced man and wife, Lacey and Robbie were being congratulated and fawned over by the relatives that had managed to make it to the ceremony. Cairo wandered over to where Nick stood, watching the happy scene.

"Hey Carter, fancy seeing you here," she said, smiling. He smiled.

"I can't believe she settled down. It just doesn't seem like Lacey, you know? After seeing her on the ship, and her now, it's like it's been a 180 degree turn," he said, gazing at Lacey, who was flushed and was the picture of happiness.

"I know, but I don't think I've ever seen her happier," Cairo said, trying to keep her smile as Veronica came over to stand by Nick. In a snap decision, Cairo decided to try to be nice.

"So, Veronica, how are you?" she said, faking a smile.

"Not bad, but Nicky, why did you have to pick something so boring for us to do today?" she whined. Cairo rolled her eyes. When Nick had arrived, he had explained to Cairo that Veronica had insisted on coming and he couldn't persuade her to stay behind. Lacey laughed it off, in her good-natured manner, saying that the more the merrier, but Cairo thought that Lacey had just been to jittery and nervous to protest much.

"Veronica, I told you that it wouldn't be interesting to you, you don't know these people," he said, sounding like he was scolding a little child.

"It would be better if the bride wasn't so ugly. It's distracting, really," Veronica said. Cairo felt like she had been slapped; no one insulted her best friend. Nick, picking up on her instant anger, intervened just before Cairo was about to burst and really let Veronica have a piece of her mind.

"Veronica, could you be any more rude? You are a guest in Kay's home, at guest at the wedding and you go and insult the bride, Kay's best friend?" Nick exclaimed, obviously outraged.

"Oh, I didn't mean it as an insult, I'm just one of those people that are…blunt. I apologize, some people are just so sensitive," she said, smiling sweetly at Cairo. Cairo sighed in frustration and turned around to find Lacey.
