Chapter 30: Left Unsaid
"It's just that there was so much left unsaid," Cairo said, speaking into the phone.
"You didn't tell him, did you? Kay, you have to tell him you love him. He just bared his soul for you, and you left him hanging," Lacey said, static distorting her voice.
"I couldn't. Oh god Lacey, if I could have. But I'm so scared. I can't…not with what happened with Brad. I want to tell him. But I'm scared that if I do…I don't know what would happen," she said.
"Cairo, he loves you. He told you. He isn't like Brad. You just have to take a chance and tell him. Or else you'll regret forever," Lacey said.
"You keep saying that he's not like Brad. But how do I know? How can I be sure?" Cairo asked meekly. Lacey was worried about her. Cairo sounded sullen and listless, which isn't at all like her. The anxiety she was feeling echoed in her voice.
"Kay, he told me. The wonderful invention of email…well, let's just say that guy likes to tell all. He told me that he would do anything for you. And I can see it whenever he looks at you, Kay. You just have to accept it and tell him what he needs to hear," Lacey advised. Cairo sighed in frustration.
"I don't know what to do. I'm just going to avoid him completely until I figure things out," Cairo said, lying about her intentions.
"Okay, sweetie. Well I hope that everything turns out okay for you. I have to go, we're landing soon. I'll talk to you later," Lacey said. Cairo waiting a few minutes after Lacey hung up and then picked up her phone again and dialed a number.
"Yes, I need to purchase a one-way ticket to Toronto, to leave as soon as possible," Cairo said to the person who picked up the phone.
* * * *
"Okay, let me get this straight, Nick. You had to choose between the Bitch From Hell, whom we all hate, or Cairo, the one you love and we all think is great, and you chose the Bitch?" AJ said. Nick hung his head.
"It wasn't really like that, AJ. But, basically, yeah. I told her, and she brushed me off," Nick said, having explained that he had told her that he loved her.
"Nick, she loves you. She told me so, remember? What you need do is get rid of the Bitch and show Cairo what she needs to see. Safety. Dude, she was lied to for, like, three or four years. She needs proof or something," Brian said.
"Yeah, but I don't know how to get rid of Veronica without…well, destroying her. You guys remember how I found her that one time," Nick said.
"Just do it. Don't let her problems destroy your life and Cairo's, as well. Suggest that she get some help or something, and then leave," Brian suggested. Nick weighed the options in his mind, then remember the look on Cairo's face the night before. He made his decision.
"Okay, I'm going to Veronica's," Nick said, standing and walking out.
