Chapter 32: Just Say It!
It was raining. Cairo sighed. She didn't want her last sight of the town to be of a gray, raining day. The sky was almost black and it was really raining hard. Cairo hoped that her flight would still be on time. Taking one last longing glance at her backyard, Cairo turned and headed out the door.
She was just about at her car when she heard him.
"Kay! Kay!" he cried desperately, hoping that she would stop. Before thinking, she turned around, and mentally kicked herself. Tell him your leaving and then go. Don't let him delay you. But after taking one look at him, her resolve almost melted. His blue eyes mirrored his concern at her packed back.
"Kay, Veronica is gone. She's completely out of my life," Nick said, reaching her. He grabbed her shoulders; almost like trying to prevent her from leaving.
"Don't…" she pleaded.
"She cheated on me. She was using me the whole time, Kay. I thought I was being this great person, helping out this person who I thought needed me. But I realized that all the time, the one that needed me the most was right here. And I just leave her hanging," Nick said.
"Nick, I can't…I'm going home," she said determinedly.
"Kay, please. Just listen. That's all I ask," he pleaded. Biting her lip, she nodded. She didn't have the power to speak anymore. There was a long pause.
"Oh god, now that I have the chance to talk, I don't know what to say. Kay, you're just…you're what I've…Shit," he swore, finding that he couldn't find what he trying to say. "I'll get to the point. I love you."
Cairo blinked back more tears and avoided his gaze. He continued.
"I always have. The first day I met you, it was just…wow, you know? And then when I found out that you were next door, it was like a dream come true. And now that I have you in my life, I can't imagine it without you. I love you, Cairo. You told me that I didn't know what I wanted, but all along, it's been you. But I was scared that you didn't want me," he said.
"This doesn't change anything, Nick. What you're telling me now, it doesn't change anything," she yelled, frustrated.
"Do you love me?" he asked quietly, catching her off guard.
"What?"
"Do you love me? You want to leave. If you can look me in the eye and tell me that you don't love me, that you don't feel the same way I do, then I'll let you go. I'll let you walk out of my life and you never have to see me again. Do you love me?" he said, the weight of his world resting on her answer. Time seemed to freeze as Cairo battled within herself. Her heart was screaming to be heard, while her head was trying silence it's wails.
She stared into his eyes, trying to find her answer. She was gasping for air, she couldn't breath. She reached up with her hands and touched his cheek. Her lower lip was trembling and her tears had long since over flowed. But she couldn't do it.
"I can't," she whispered quietly. For a moment, Nick felt his stomach drop. His world was falling apart. But she continued. "I can't tell you I don't love you. Because I do, Nick. I do."
Nick released a deep breath that he'd been holding. He looked down at the girl in front of him. She was shaking all over, she was crying. But her eyes were sparkling.
"You do?" he said weakly.
"I love you, Nick," she said, throwing herself into his embrace. His strong arms circled around her, holding her tightly to him. He finally had her; he didn't want to let her go.
The rain poured down around them, but they were oblivious to it. After pulling back, she pushed damp strands of hair out of Nick's eyes. Staring deep into his eyes, for the first time she wasn't scared.
What she had with Brad had been a lie. But she was looking into Nick's eyes now, and it was like looking into his soul. He was truly genuine.
With even more tears streaming down her face, she leaned forward and met his lips with hers. Tightening their hold around each other, they kissed, all of their pent up emotions from the past 5 months finally releasing, leaving them dazed and in a state of pure bliss.
Resting his forehead against hers, Nick gazed into her eyes.
"I love you, Kay," he whispered. She smiled, then kissed him again. She pressed her body close to his and whispered in his ear.
"I love you Nick. I'm sorry it took me so long to tell you. But now that I have, I want to yell it as loud as I can."
"Would you settle for a kiss?" he asked, grinning. She laughed and granted his request. It was the least romantic setting in the world, the rain pounding on them, their skin glistening from it, but they ignored it all and added a perfect picture of human love on the dreary street, on that rainy day.
