10: More Questions

Limping slightly, Beth made her way quietly towards the house. When she reached the fence guarding the backyard, she allowed her body to rest for a few minutes. She was weak and dizzy from the blood she had lost. But she could still feel him there, so she knew that all was well. For the moment.

Having recovered enough strength, Beth examined the latch of the gate, and figured how to open it. It took her awhile, as the metal was slippery from the rain, and her fingers from blood. After minutes of agonising effort, Beth achieved her prize, and it swung open.

She crept around to the back, searching for any sign of him. She knew he would be waiting for her, she knew that he needed some answers and would think that she was the only one able to give them to him.

"Who are you?" a quiet, cold voice asked, causing her to freeze. She turned slowly and met the clear blue eyes.

"My name is Beth. I have not lied to you," she whispered. Brian just stared at her from where he was sitting. She had a large gash on her forehead that was still bleeding. She was completely soaked, and her hair was hanging in front of her pale face, trying to hide the evidence of her fight. She was shaking slightly, from the cold, he assumed.

"How did you know?"

"There are just… things that I know. You have to leave," she whispered, looking around her furtively.

"Why?"

"Because."

"Who was at the house? Why was she trying to kill Kevin?"

"I don't know. Please, there's not enough time to explain. You have to go," she spoke, raising the volume of her voice slightly.

"What about Kevin? I can't just leave him. What if she comes back?"

"She won't. Not for him."

"Why not? How can you be so sure? I'm not willing to bet the life of my cousin on a feeling you have," he said, standing up.

"Because she doesn't want him anymore. She wants you."

"How do you know this?" he asked, her words just bouncing off of him. He couldn't breath. He couldn't understand. The world was spinning. And in all the confusion, someone the ordinary girl with the odd eyes had found herself in the middle of his world. She was hurt; bleeding and shaking, so very pale, and even though she knew more than he felt comfortable with, he felt no danger from her. He trusted her.

"Please come with me. She knows where to find you," she pleaded.

"I can't just drop everything and run away for you. I need to know what is happening. I need answers," he shouted.

"And I can give you some," she said. Suddenly she paused. A look crossed her face that had Brian scared.

"Did you hear that?" she whispered softly. A huge crash of glass shattered the quiet calm. Brian snapped his head towards the house. Beth steeled herself, building a wall around her mind, and then reached out and grabbed his arm.

"We have to go. She wants you now," Beth hissed.

"My girlfriend is in there!" he cried. He twisted out of her grip on his arm, and ran into the house. Shaking with shock due to her injuries and the sudden chill she felt, Beth followed steadily after him. He was running in the dark, quietly, stealthily. She followed intuitively, unable to see and a stranger to the surroundings.

They reached a sitting room. Beth caught up with Brian, and just as he was about to launch himself towards the intruder, Beth grabbed him and pulled him down behind a couch. He fought against her, but she managed to hold him down. He stopped fighting her, and met her eyes. She put a finger to her mouth, indicating for him to be quiet.

The intruder was thrashing around, throwing things. She picked up a lamp and smashed it into the wall. Beth listened as more of Brian's possessions were destroyed, until the woman seemed to calm down slightly. Then she heard a noise like liquid splashing over the living room. Beth's mind tried to figure it out, but before she could, her sense of smell kicked in.

"Brian, go quietly and get your girlfriend. As fast as possible," Beth whispered quietly. He turned to meet her eyes, and nodded. They were very grave and full of fear.

"I smell it too," he whispered. He crawled along the floor until he was near the doorway, and then he sprinted away, before the intruder to see him. As soon as Beth was sure he was far enough away, she stood up.
