Chapter 11: Green-Eyed Monster
"Okay you stupid horse, this is how it's going to be. You are going to go…now!" Cairo muttered as she attempted to cajole the horse into moving. So far, it had stood still for about ten minutes.
"Come on!" Cairo whined. It turned and looked at her, snorted, and then went right back to eating grass. Cairo sighed. Feeling industrious after last night's rendezvous with Nick, she had decided to try her hand at horseback riding, despite her complete inexperience. After wandering around a trail for an hour, Cairo had pointed the horse in the general direction back home. And now, the stables were well within view, and the damn thing wouldn't move! It wouldn't have been a problem, but the horse was taller than Cairo's 5'2", and she was not willing to jump off of it.
"Carrie, look at what I found!" Meagan's irritating voice called out. Shifting on the uncomfortable saddle, Cairo saw Meagan holding a very ancient looking rifle. She had just come out of the stables.
"Be careful with that thing!" Cairo called, having heard too many horror stories about old guns and how they would suddenly fire, causing serious accidents.
"Oh don't worry, it's so old, it's probably not even loaded. I found it in the stable. But look at it, it's a genuine antique!" she cried out. Cairo felt really nervous as she saw Meagan aim the gun out over the pond.
"Look, can you put that thing down? It may be loaded-" Cairo was cut off as a deafening sound filled the air. The horse reared, and took off, spilling Cairo onto the ground. As she landed, Cairo caught a glimpse of Meagan falling backwards with the force of the back-shot before she hit the ground, head first.
The next thing Cairo saw was a pair of blue eyes leaning over her face. As her eyes focused, she could make out facial features, and realised it was Brian.
"Carrie, are you okay?" he asked, his voice full of concern.
"I fell off the horse," she said. He chuckled slightly as he helped her sit up, her head spinning. Trying to shake it off, she looked around her. Everyone who had heard the gunshot had apparently come running. Kevin was attempting to calm the wild horse, who had run right across the field, Stacey was bent over Meagan, and everyone else was just arriving one the scene. Blinking fiercely to clear her vision, which was still swimming, she reached out and grabbed Brian's shoulder for support.
"Are you sure you're alright?" he asked, bending over to see her face.
"Meagan, are you okay? Honestly? You took a pretty hard fall," Cairo heard Nick saying. Looking over again at Meagan, she saw that he had joined the small group around her.
"Nice to know he cares," Cairo said a little bitterly, accepting the hand that Brian was holding out. She stood up, and grabbing his shoulder again, waited for the vertigo to subside before she tried to walk again.
"Meagan, are you sure you're okay? Come on, tell the truth. Did you hurt anything?" Cairo could hear the concern in Nick's voice, and it only added the nausea she was feeling from her fall.
"C'mon Carrie, I think we'd better get you up to the main house," Brian said, frowning. He started to lead her up the path, when the movement caused a severe dizzy spill, and she fell to the ground again. Brian was bent over her, trying to figure out had badly she had hit her head, when Nick suddenly remembered Cairo. He walked over to where she was, and saw his best friend bent over her, holding her hand.
"What's going on here?" he demanded, with a hint of accusation in his voice. Brian shot him a look of disbelief.
"I'm trying to convince Cairo that the world is not spinning at an unusually fast pace, but it's not really working that well," Brian said, brushing off the accusatory tone.
"Then get your hands off my girlfriend. Let me help her," Nick said coldly, pushing Brian out of the way.
"Is that before or after you check on Meagan first?" Cairo asked weakly, pushing his hand away from her. She stood up shakily by herself, and started to walk, slowly, up the path.
"I'll see you gentlemen at the main house," she said over her shoulder. Waiting a minute until she was safely out of earshot, Brian turned to his friend.
"What the hell was that about?"
"I don't like the way you two have become so comfortable with each other. Every time you are in the same room together, you always have your hands all over each other," Nick said.
"I was helping her walk, Nick. Since when is that such a crime? Especially when her own boyfriend is busy being concerned with the girl who caused the accident. And he doesn't seem to give a damn that she got thrown from a horse!" Brian shouted.
"Just…stay away from her, okay?" Nick shouted back, and then he stalked after Cairo.
