Chapter 3: Ditto

In frustration, Cairo blew the stray hair out of her eyes. She had committed some evil deed, she knew she must have because she was being punished for it. Cruelly so.

It was bad enough she had to say goodbye to Nick after only a week, but now she had to sit idly by and watch her flirt shamelessly with him, in the front seat. Ignoring Megan's sickening giggles, she looked out the window and watched the scenery whip by and became very cynical.

She had accepted it a long time before, that Nick was pretty popular with women and was often the subject of their flirtations. All the Boys were, given their celebrity status and general good looks. But it made Cairo feel very insecure when it happened right in front of her, with someone that wasn't just a fan, one face in a crowd of thousands.

It was as bad for the other "girlfriends", as they were known. They were mostly in the entertainment industry, therefore they were drop-dead gorgeous. And Cairo was just the ordinary, literal representation of the girl next door. The others were used to competition, given their profession, but it was pretty new to Cairo.

So, to have to listen to the tour coordinator, Megan, who had so graciously offered to drive Cairo and Nick to the airport, giggle and flirt with him was absolute torture. If Megan had been an inch taller, she could be a super model. She was constantly trying to compete with Cairo for Nick's attention, but Cairo had too much pride to do so. Which was in why she was in the back seat while Nick was in the front. With Megan.

And it continued while they faced the crush of the busy airport patrons. Cairo became more and more miserable as they neared her gate. A desperate need to attach herself to Nick came over her as she faced their pending separation, so she latched herself onto his arm. She felt more and more invisible as Nick became engrossed in their conversation, and ignored Cairo.

Finally, they reached Cairo's gate and the plane was already boarding.

"Miss me?" Cairo asked.

"Of course," he said, brushing his lips against hers. Then he pulled away from her, and backing away, waved. Feeling discouraged by the cold good bye she was receiving, she decided that sentiment was the only cure.

"I love you," she called to him. He smiled.

"Ditto," he said, and walked away, leaving Cairo stunned.

"Ditto? What the fuck was that, ditto!" she cried. Upset and worried, she grabbed her bag and stormed towards her gate.
