Backmasking is hidden messages found in songs when you play them backwards. For example: 'The Beetles' says, "number nine" when played forwards. When you play it backwards he says, "turn me on dead man". It is said that when playing these songs forwards your brain pickes up the backwards messages subliminally and can affect your mind, actions, and personality; but this has been proven by scientists and others resarching this subject not to be true.
Since the beginning of recorded music, musicians have been able to add features to their music that they weren't able to in the past. Multiple tracks, multiple takes of one apparently continuous track, acoustic control, and so on. The physical reversal of sounds also brought a completely different feature to recorded music, the most 'strange' of which was reversal of voices or vocal tracks. The ability to 'hide' phrases of spoken words in the music ('there' but actually not 'there'), became something that popular artists would take advantage of.
Here are some samples of backward masking. There are lots of Satanistic messages by backward masking,(e.g. Marylin Manson, Led Zepplin) but I'm not putting those on my page.(since I'm Christian) If you want to hear those you could try looking for them on the net by yourself.

It's very clear that those two samples above are done deliberately by engineered reversal. However, here's an interesting one. We do not know whether it's done deliberately by the artist because the sound is not clear. I mean, when the sound is reversed it sounds somewhat weird to people's ear. Thus, people could just THINK that they hear the secret message, but in fact, there might be nothing.
