A fun cage makes a happy squirrel.
-Get a cage that is quite large, but the bars are small enough that the squirrel cannot slip out.
-When the squirrel is small have a towel as the bedding, but when it gets older and messier, move to cedar shavings.
-Provide plenty of toys for your squirrel. Some examples are: a small stuffed animal that your squirrel can beat up, and things hanging from the top of the cage that the squirrel can bat around.
-Squirrels love to chew. Deer Antlers provide a squirrel with Calcium, and is a good chewy thing. My squirrel likes to chew on a hemp necklace hanging from the top of his cage.
-Provide natural stuff also. When you finally release your squirrel he will have culture shock if he has been living in a luxury squirrel apartment. So provide your squirrel with a sturdy tree limb to practice climbing on, and other various outdoor things.
-Keep food in the cage. Plain Cheerios, Grapes, Pine Nuts, Pears, and Pecans are good things to help your squirrel learn how to chew. Provide a balanced diet or your squirrel could get a serious bone disease and die.
-Even though your squirrel might not know how to drink out of a water bottle, keep one in its cage. It will eventually learn how to use it.
-Make a squirrel hammock! Take a washcloth and manipulate it in a way that it resembles a hammock. This will be your squirrels favorite sleeping place.
Incorporating all of these steps into your cage should make an enjoyable living environment for your squirrel.
