dear support system,

if you're on digest, then be assured that i got tickets to get in theshow. i just came back from the nyu show and here's what i have to say:

the opener, david meade. he sucked. he is what is wrong with music today. bland, boring, and totally rock forumalated to be a "hit" song. basically a dime a dozen sort of guy, and the fact that he is on this college tour thing with liz just makes me want to point out that these are the types of things that liz will have to do, while answering to capitol. basically major label bullshit sort of stuff. well, i heckled him, and shit, and he was pretty much just being a wuss about it. what really pissed me off is that it was completely obvious that the band was a bunch of frat boys dressed up in suits opening for liz phair. i mean, that's just wrong. and then to top it all off, he just kept saying, "oh, you are so right." while people wer clapping. this guy's an asshole, and i hope his career ends soon.

anyway, liz came out and once the initial excitement of seeing her wore off, i started to get pissed again. first of all, where did she get that new jersey monsters of rock drummer, and second, who is the "alternative circa 1992" guy on bass? those guys suck. then, after the second song, fuck and run, she came down to the audience and started shaking peoples hands, which is a move she obviously stole from natalie merchant, and it seemed really fake. i mean, don't get me wrong, i love liz, but it was such a fake move. she more than redeemed herself by rocking out to the extreme and giving me the punk rock symbol that i was giving to her during 6'1" and supernova. after the show i got a set list and a guitar pick. the set was pretty much what she's been playing at all of these other shows. of the two new songs that i heard, i liked firewalker better than the "new rock" song. the new "new rock" song's chord progression is lifted off of "bloodclot" the first single off the new rancid album. by the way. she played a great set, and was looking great, and i'm still completely psyched from it. however, the more and more i see liz live, the more and more i wish that i could have just captured her and kept her right after whip smart came out...pre-makeover, pre-studio musician band, and pre-alanis. it's turned into such a job. i just wish she would fake a little d.i.y. every now and then. i think i'm still pissed about the capitol deal.

big hug.

john kim

whoa there cowboy,
i just read somebody's review of the nyu show and i have to say i was pretty surprised at it. my humble opinion??? the show was AMAZING!!! liz was amazing and beautiful and talented and ... eep, just very amazing. that's all i have to say in the way of gushing ridiculously, so here's the setlist:
chopsticks, fuck and run, johnny feelgood, mesmerizing, cinco de mayo, flower, firewalker, never said, 6'1", glory, uncle alvarez, don't apologize, polyester bride, supernova, whitechocolatespacegg, perfect world, stratford-on-guy, support system, divorce song (these last fourwere encores).
i was right up front, got lots of great pictures (well, hopefully :) ), taped it (although the sound quality ended up being pretty damn shitty), AND got a setlist. all in all it was a great night, plus the nyu kids rocked. :)
i tried my hardest to get her to play "see the light" and she actually heard me and said, "oh i can play that, that's exciting...people always yell things i can't play anymore"...but she didn't play it.oh well. :)
later tators

Well it's a day later so this will probably be after a lot of other posts about this show, so I won't get into any details. I'll just say that Liz was incredible, I had a great view of the stage and it was my most exciting Liz concert experience. I really liked "Firewalker" a lot. At the part where she sings "Like joy, like joy" and goes up really high I got chills. Awesome.

I also met a fellow support-system person while I was waiting in line to get in. I knew she must be on the list when I heard her talking about Nicole's story about the "troll girl" singing Fuck and Run in the hallway. :) Anyway, just wanted to mention that because it was the first time I'd ever met someone from the list.

Oh, and one more thing. This is to John Kim: I read your post where you mentioned Liz giving you the punk rock sign. I was standing pretty close to you during the show because I saw you give her the sign and then Liz do it back and I was like, Wow, he's lucky. Of course I didn't know it was you at the time. :) But I just wanted to say that I thought what you said about Liz stealing the shaking people's hands at the edge of the stage thing from Natalie Merchant was a little off-base. I mean, I've been to a lot of concerts (including Natalie Merchant) and many of the artists have done that, not just her. And I bet they didn't all steal it from her either. I think it's nice, and if I had been in the front row and gotten to shake Liz's hand, I doubt that I would have cared who she "stole" it from or how "fake" it seemed. But of course you are entitled to your opinion, as I am mine. Anyway, I thought the show was great, and that's really all I meant to post about!

oh boy you guys don't know how psyched I am that I get to post this- guess who I stood like 2 feet away from at the liz show last night at nyu!?! Tim Robbins! He was there- really! I was off to the left facing the stage, all the way up front, and he was there- he was so into it when liz was singing perfect world, he was like mesmerized by her. One of my friends was convinced he was going to get up on stage, cause she said she had some more surprises. but he didnt, he just went to the side of the stage. he was with a woman - 20 ish- susan was not there.
I thought the show was amazing- it was my birthday, first of all, Liz on my b-day- what could be better than that!
also, my brother who is a total music snob- really into musicians, zappa, john zorn, etc., well, he said he would come to the show cause it was my b-day and if i wanted him there he would go. he just didnt get what i loved so much about liz. well- he loved the show, thought she was adorable and cool and that she rocked! yay, finally he was able to see what we all do- everyone who i was with had a great time and really loved the show.

I was curious to know what song that person said! thats cool- her banter is so cute and funny and witty- i like hearing her speak almost better than sing sometimes.
oh, and firewalker is an amazing song- i think the lyrics are "in spite" also- thats what i heard- just amazing chorus-
she was wearing a very cute (i know, that word again) black dress, spaghetti straps, with white flowers or something on it- i was kinda to far to see details-
I am still coming off the high of the show...

well, thats all, I forgot to get a shirt, and i am so upset and i need a copy of this or any other college show. i love may queen, its one of my faves, i would love a copy of this one- i love that she's doing different sets every night, thats pretty cool too.
ok, i am exhausted after a week of b-day celebrations, i am taking the day off tomorrow too-
later,
Lani
