Let me just say - that was an experience of a lifetime. I've been waiting well over 8 months for this and nothing will compare. OK - here's the basics: Liz came on at about 9:25-9:30. She was wearing a white tank top and a black leather mini skirt. Her hair was all poofed up and she looked incredibly good. I was so excited to see her I was jumping up and down and screaming and in shock. she played two new songs and a lot from exile, only a couple from wcse and whip-smart.

HERE'S THE PART OF THE REVIEW WHERE I WARN PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIKE TO KNOW SETLISTS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. IF THAT'S YOU - STOP READING... OK, she opened with Chopsticks! Except she didn't play piano, she had the keyboard dude play it and she just sang. It was so amazing. She then went into "Fuck and Run". At this point I still couldn't believe I was watching Liz phair play fuck and run right in front of me! OK, after this my memory goes sketchy, so it'll all be out of order now. Before she played "flower" she explained it like this: "OK, you guys wanna hear a story? Well, I wrote this one back in college. I really liked this guy and him and his girlfriend were gonna break up at this party and so I crashed it to be there. Then I went home and got out my four-track and a couple of beers and wrote this song" So that's where she got the "..i'll fuck you and your girlfriend too" part maybe? Ok, the only other song she explained was "uncle alvarez" which she said was actually written about her uncle who was a litigator and it was kinda making fun of him being mad about everything or somethinglike that.
One of the new songs that she played was called I think "firewalker" and it seriously rules. The other one she didn't say the name of but it kicks ass too.
OK, then the other songs that I remember were:
Cinco de Mayo
Polyester Bride
Johnny Feelgood
Mesmerizing
uh....others I'm sure...
Encore:Stratford-On-Guy
Divorce Song
Perfect World

The only sad part of the night: she didn't play "Explain It To Me"...and I didn't get to meet her but I'm gonna try damn hard tomorrow in Iowa City! So goodnight folks, I hope you all get to see this amazing woman someday!

This was the third time i've seen liz in the last six months (first ave in mpls, vic theater in chicago) and teh fourth time i've seen her total (i saw her solo show a couple of years back), and ive gotta say-- she just gets better. Wow. Even in a shitty venue (great hall at the university of minnesota better known for its amazing echo than anything else). She appears a thousand times more confident than she did even six months ago. And relaxed on stage. A couple of years back she was so nervous on stage that i felt sorry for her. And her new songs? Straight ahead rock and roll. Motherhood seems to light a fire under her. Now if she'd dump the keyboards. Maybe on a song or two but not every one.

Katie Seippel's review

I know I am a little late, but I just wanted to give my input about the Show in Mpls (tuesday the 13th). Liz was great as she always is and I am really begining to like her new stage presence, it's so cute when she tells stories and dances and laughs on stage. I got to the show a little late so I had to push my way up to the front and ended up standing behind a very tall and very wide person, who didn't appear to know Liz at all and wasn't too excited about seeing her live.....I think maybe all concert venues should implement a rule about who gets to be in front, there should be a quiz or something so that only the most loyal fans can be right up front. That way you don't have to get to the show super early, you can just show up whenever you want and then take the quiz and be escorted right to the front. I guess this may sound kind of eliteist, but I think we should have more rights at a Liz Phair concert since we are much more devoted fans. That way people like me (who are rather small and noncofrontational) won't have to try and push through a bunch of assholes just so I can see the top of Liz's head. Well that was somewhat of a stupid tangent..the whole point of this banter is that the show was great (because it was Liz) but it would have been much better if I would have gotten a better view. have a nice day
Katie
PS: the two new songs that Liz played at her show rocked!!
