Wow!

(let me say it again)

WOW!

When I saw the Millersville show last Thursday, I commented to a friend of mine that my fondest wish was that the next two Liz concerts I'd be able to see (9:30 club in DC and Bohager's in Baltimore) would be *half* as good. Millersville was, bar none, the finest concert I'd ever seen...

Until tonight, that is.

I got to the club at about 6:30, and met with Tad and Mary (from the list) to give them their tickets. After waiting about an hour, or so, we got in. We managed to get *right* up front - directly in front of center stage. David Mead sort of surprised me. I was expecting him to be a whole lot worse than he was. They were pretty solid musicians, and the songs weren't bad. It was certainly head-and-shoulders better than the opening act in Millersville. Then again, this wasn't why most of us were there..

Once he finished his set (about 45 minutes, +/-), Liz came out - and people went wild. She was standing about four feet away (give or take) and, as before, she was simply lovely: green leather pants, a black tube-top kind of thing and actual shoes (black), as opposed to the sneakers at Millersville.

The sound was top-notch, and the band was very much together. The set list on the stage was identical to the ones we've been seeing from UMN, ENC, Millersville, etc - about fourteen songs, with the two new ones thrown in for good measure. This time, though, she significantly veered away from the set list. I think this had a lot to do with the audience, which was *extremely* into the show. I think this did some good things for the band, which seemed to be enjoying themselves.

The *HUGE* highlight for me was when I shouted out a request for May Queen (my favorite). Liz not only looked at me and heard me, but smiled and *answered*. To top it off, she even played it ... solo. She did pretty well, but ended up messing up the final verses. She went back and played 'em over again, though. I can't tell you all how exciting thatwas!

I think they ended up playing at least four or five more songs than were on the setlist. Folks in the audience requested Support System. The band launched into it even though Liz didn't have a guitar on, and Buddy hadn't tuned up appropriately (according to the roadie). Buddy basically improvised the whole thing, and did a wonderful job. He's a pretty exceptional guitarist. The whole band is pretty exceptional.

Anyway, we waited around for a while - but didn't see Liz (at least I didn't). We did have a chance to talk to the guitar roadie - who told us, among other things, that Liz, as he put it, "couldn't even pick out which amp was hers onstage." She's pretty hands-off - they put a tuned guitar in her hands, she makes magic. It's a simple equation.

This was a wonderful show - even greater for meeting a bunch of the folks from the list. I'm really looking forward to the Bohager's show, even if my schedule is going to be ugly as a result. Now if I could only work out the logistics of getting to the Crowbar show...

Take care-

Let me begin by saying...SHIT!!!

This was a show that was truly AMAZING...

Let's begin with Liz, wearing a strapless black top with dark green leather pants (which outlined her derriere quite nicely I must say), two-inch heel sandals (which were so cool they HAD to be Euorpean), a choker-necklace and another hanging loosely below it...her hair hanging shoulder-length with two single braids falling on either side...well, she looked great, as always...and she was wielding a red-and-white guitar...She opened with Chopsticks, and although I can't remember the setlist in order, she sang: Johnny Feelgood, Never Said, Flower, Mesmerizing, Cinco de Mayo, Glory, Only Son, Uncle Alverez, Don't Apologize, Firewalker, May Queen, Support-System, Supernova, Polyester Bride, Fuck And Run, WCSE, Stratford-on-Guy, and Divorce Song...SHE PLAYED SUPPORT-SYSTEM...AAAGGHHH!!! AND MAY QUEEN!!! I still can't believe it!!! Mesmerizing was absolutley incredible because it was played much slower than the album version - very intimate...Johnny Feelgood was extended with an awesome guitar jam...and Support-System seemed to be on a whim - because she said something like, "yeah, let's do it" right before...May Queen was a HUGE surprise and the two "new" songs were great as well...I was near the front row (as were other 'listers'), and I was elated when I grasped her hand TWICE near the beginning of her set when she strolled down near the fans...and although our screams for "Shatter," "Blood Keeper," "Bars on the Bed," et. al. were unheard under the din of the crowd, Liz was receptive (is that a word?) to the DC faithful, at ease with her band on stage and talkative between songs...Many people from the list were there and it was great hanging out before and during the show...we had a "posse" of rabid fans near the front row which made it a Liz "frenzy" of sorts...a new high for me, anyways...

Saw Liz at the 9:30 club last night. It was such a great show. I got there one hour before the doors open so i could get a good spot. While waiting in line i saw a car pull up with Liz in the back seat. She got out and she was carrying Nicholas. That was pretty cool. He's such an adorable kid. While waiting outside in line i could hear Liz warming up inside. She sang Explain it to me, Johnny Feelgood, and Never Said.

Once doors opened at 7:30 me and my friend claimed a spot next to the stage just left of center. David Mead came out and played for about 45 minutes. I was really impressed. He was really good.

Liz came out around 10:00. She was wearing a tight black tube top and tight green pants. I was about 3 feet away from Liz for the whole show. She didn't really do much talking between the songs but she did take some requests which i thought was pretty cool.

Here is the set list to the best of my recollection. I was able to see the set list from where i was during the show but was not able to get it afterwards. I'm pretty sure that i have all the songs but i'm also pretty sure they are not in the right order. But i'll do my best

1. Chopsticks
2. Fuck and Run
3. Johnny Feelgood
4. 6'1
5. Cinco Demayo
6. Dance of the Seven Vails
7. Glory (not on set list)
8. Go on Ahead (not on set list)
9. Never said
10. Super Nova
11. Fire Walker
12. Polyester Bride
13. Don't Appologize (called something "Rock" on set list)
14. May Queen (not on set list- request)(solo- Liz forgot the chords and stumbled through it)
15. Uncle Alverez

ENCORE

16. Whitechocolatespaceegg
17. Support System (not on set list. At this point they didn't know what song to play. The guitarist went and whispered something in Liz's ear. Everyone was yelling different songs but they were waiting for someone to say the right one. Eventually the guitarist came up to me whispered Support System. I yelled out support system, Liz looked at me, and the they broke out ito the song. Pretty cool.)
18. Stratford on guy (not on set list)
19. Divorce song

Again. I almost sure these are not in the right order because i'm doing it all by memory. Hopefully someone on the list got the set list and will post it. It was a great show. She went through the songs pretty fast and was done her set in about an hour and twenty minutes. I can't wait to see her next week in Baltimore. I'll post again after that show.

Later, Mike

Ahhhhh, where to begin?
Liz was absolutely amazing last night!! The 9:30 club was sold out so there were about five hundred people there (I'm guessing). Liz wore this black tube top and dark green leather pants. She is so beautiful!!! She looked so relaxed and happy on stage...even more so than she did when she was here in october. Liz was laughing and talking to the crowd, and at one point she leaned down to touch people's hands. She's deninately kicked her stage fright.
She played basically the same songs as everywhere else so I won't post the setlist (and someone else probably will post it anyway) BUT she did play mayqueen - just liz and her guitar while the rest of the band kinda watched. She said before she started it that she loved playing it but that she could never get it right....and then she kinda messed up the guitar parts in the middle...

Oh! and there were two really nice guys next to me and my friends. They gave liz some flowers at the beginning of the show (hi if you're on the list!)

Firewalker and Don't appoligize better be on whatever album liz puts out next! They are both really great songs...and much different from anything on WCSE. They sound much tougher than anything on WCSE.. they're more like her older stuff. I liked Firewalker better just because I couldn't make out all the lyrics to Don't Apoligize...But still, both songs were amazing.

Did anybody record the show? if you did, email me and we can trade stuff

a little late is better than never..........
9.30 club...........totally incredible. this is my fourth time seeing liz since oct. and this was the best show by far. i know others have sent their reviews in but no one has mentioned how katie screamed out "did you get the birthday card" and liz replied "i do appreciate the birthday card". the card she is talking about is the one we (support system) put together (i cannot really say we b/c i really had nothing to do w/ it and actually never even sent my greeting in, bad me). katie yelled this at a real silent point right before a song, after many attempts at yelling already we thought she'd never hear. way to go katie for finally finding a quiet point!!!
also. . . . . . katie and i received lots of comments about standing at a "sit-down" show.............i have another issue to ask/bring up. we (group of all of us support systemers who met up) were singing the majority of the time. at one point this guy looked over at katie and i and said "can you shut up?".......hmmmmmm..........well, "no", we thought, and dismissed his comment. but i'm just curious to know what everyone's thoughts are on this..............???? there are definitely two things that i'm not going to do at a liz show a. sit down and b. keep my mouthclosed..................
well.......i'm debating going up to baltimore to see liz next week. let's see what happens..............why does it have to be a work nite???..............
btw: it was lovely meeting everyone--tom (again), becky, tad, brian, mike, mark, did i get everyone's name right?? oh, and meredith, where did you disappear to after the show???? we barely got to say 'hi'?????? also, if anyone tooks pics or recorded, please let me know!!!!!!

I don't have much to add to the raves of those who've posted on this so far (it really was a super-duper ultra-INCREDIBLE show), but I'll say what I can...

*Damn, but Liz is *hot*. Dude, if I were a man or a lesbian... (And if any other straight girls out there think Catherine Zeta-Jones is so gorgeous it hurts, drop me a line so I don't feel like such a weirdo.) Her pants were the same olive green pleather (at least, I'm pretty sure they're pleather) cigarette pants she wore on Sessions at West 54th in the fall. (That was in the fall, wasn't it? It's all a blur.) If I'm not mistaken, they have a matching slim-cut jacket. And I think they might be by Agnes B, although don't quote me on that. I loved her tube top, although she appeared, understandably, to be having a little trouble keeping it up. Overall, it was a terrific outfit.

*I screamed for "Bars of the Bed," but to no avail. Not surprisingly.

*I am so proud to have been part of that crowd--the love was hanging in the air like the smoke of 800 clove cigarettes (which there also was, and which I blame for my hideous respiratory problems of the last two days). You could actually see huge waves of love washing over the stage. And this is from the viewpoint of a girl who indulged in nothing more than the above-mentioned second-hand clove smoke, gag gag. We were so supportive. Go, us! Liz rewarded us richly.

*The list people found me! Of course, it was toward the end of the show, and then I had to pretty much jam it out of there after the show, so I didn't actually get to really to talk to them, but it was still cool. They were very... boisterous. Was it you guys going "RIIIIIIIIIIDE! RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE!" over and over and over? Good Lord, that was loud. Impressively so. Hey, do you think when she said she appreciated the birthday card, she actually knew which one you were talking about? Because I'd really like to think she read my haiku.

*I got her pick! Well, one of them, at least. At the end of the show, she tossed maybe three? of them out into the crowd, one of which sailed, like, directly in front of me. And then it disappeared! I immediately dropped to my hands and knees and started pawing around on the nasty sticky beer-soaked floor, but I couldn't find it! There was this very intense bald-headed gentleman down there looking for it, too, and he kept shouting at me (note that our heads were maybe three inches apart), "Did you find it? DID YOU FIND IT?!?!" He frightened me. I gave up after ten minutes or so, but I couldn't leave without checking one more time. So I went back over, and this guy who looked sort of like Isaac Hanson, only more attractive, told me he had found it, and that he'd like me to have it. So I embraced him gleefully. What a great guy! Cool Hanson Guy, if you read this, I am forever endebted to you--if you ever need anything (and I do mean *anything*), turn to me first. I love you. You rock.

I think that's all. Except, oh, those Exile in Guyville cover crop top t-shirts are FUCKING HIDEOUS. They have this strange quasi-white trash feel about them. Just bad. Sort of weird, considering how fashion-forward Liz is--she would *never* wear one of those things.

OK, that's really all.

Love,
Meredith
