"On The Road With Great Big Sea"

Great Big Sea has been busy touring the U.S. in support of "Rant and Roar", their first album ever released in the United States.  It's a compilation of songs from their albums "Up" and "Play".   I went south of the border to see the boys play in Boston MA. They played to a sold out crowd at the Paradise Rock Club on March 27th.  The crowd knew the words to all their songs and enthusiastically sang along.  The first show GBS did in Boston, they played to a crowd of 25 -30 people and now, a short time later, they are selling out shows.  The show went by at a breakneck speed, only slowing down shortly for some lovely ballads. Great Big Sea's mandate has always been to rework traditional tunes and make them current - judging by the response in Boston, its working!  It was certainly a great big kitchen party at the Paradise in Boston that night! The boys left the crowd wanting more and certainly made some new fans in the New England area.  "Come see us in Newfoundland, we'll have fun", says Alan Doyle.
Their success is growing steadily in the United States. All the record stores in Boston are stocking Rant and Roar and sales are good.  I spoke to a few people at the Paradise who were seeing GBS for the first time and they were amazed at the shear energy the boys demonstrate on stage.   In an Interview on 92.5, The River, DJ  Bob Stuart says "I'm going to make a prediction, you guys are going to be big in the states, who wouldn't like you!"
Great Big Sea will be releasing their next CD early this summer (tentatively June 22) and will be once again touring Canada, which will include their annual Great Big Picnic in Halifax! The band has been singing some of the new songs on the U.S. tour and I have to say I am
impressed with what I have heard so far. To learn more about Great Big Sea, visit their website at www.greatbigsea.com. Canadian tour dates should be posted soon.
