September 19th, 1999, a night to remember!
45 minutes after the opening act, EYC, have left the stage, thousands of fans screamed as the lights suddenly went out and smoke and the sound of Star Wars filled the MCI Center in Washington DC. The croud looked up as none other than the Backstreet Boys snowboarded over their heads and into their hearts as the night was only beginning. The Boys and their dancers started at the back end of the stage and faced one side of "their people". Kevin, who appeared to be the head of the bunch at the moment, stared into the camera that was putting his face on the huge screens above us and nodded as the Boys then marched to the next side, and repeated the silent greeting ritual.(They were the only silent ones, really.) After the got the croud pumped and ready to go, they wasted no time in starting to sing Larger Than Life (which the performance definately was).
Nick introduced himself, as Kevin, Brian, AJ and Howie changed costumes below the stage. Once he had finished, each boy took his turn in personally saying hello. I cannot belive how many costume changes these poor Boys went through! As soon as they went below the stage to get their new wardrobe, the Backstreet Band took over with their awesome musical talent.
The songs compiled of all the songs on Millennium (except INYT), and the hits from Backstreet Boys, as well as a medley of Get Down, We've Got It Goin' On, and That's The Way I Like It, very well mixed together.
The highlights of the night, and there were many of them, generated the most screams. From Kevin's Piano solo in Back To Your Heart, to The Perfect Fan (where everyone enveyed the five mothers and daughters on stage holding hands with the Boys), to everytime Nick mentioned something about "sexuality" in any of the songs, I'm sure we broke some sort of sound barrier that night.
I must give props to the dancers too, they did a great job. The choreography was absolutely excellent throughout the whole show. When each dancer was individually introduced, they then showed just what they could do as Nick pounded out the beats on the drums (he has improved since last year, by the way!). The Boys didn't waste any time being Goof-offs either...any chance they got, AJ would make a "nanny-nanny-boo-boo" face at the audience, or Brian would play the guitar on his roses he recieved from fans, and everytime Nick yelled "Does DC know how to party?....I saaaaaaiiiid DOES DC KNOW HOW TO PARTY?!", he sure got his answer.
The Backstreet Boys surely did not dissapoint any fan in the MCI Center on Sunday, yet left every single one with a huge smile on their face saying "I KNOW he was waving at ME!". Thanks, Boys, you did an awesome job. We love you! :)
