Grant's Concert
He only preformed for an hour or so because it was a multiple band show but it was the most amazing performance I have yet seen in my lifetime. He played four new songs off of the new
CD and they all rocked. He started the show with "Rubbed Out", the song which wasn't on the first CD, but it was a little differently played than on "Live at the Resevoire"(I know this because I have the CD); it was a little heavier and powerful in which he did a lot of hard and quick stumming of the main three chords in the begining. The drum beat was also a nice new touch to it. He then played "The End of Outside" followed by performance of "Wishful Thinking". Then the fun started when he played a new mellow tune called "Alibi". Although it was mellow it was an uplifting song. He then played "Bareley Breathing" which drove the crowd even wilder. He followed up with another new tune called (I think it was) "In Between" which was also great; it was more up-beat but still very Duncan-like. It was around this time when a girl in the front rowasked him to take off his pants where he replied with a witty yet humurous remark , "No, sorry I'm not going to do that...at least at this point in my career...". He then played "She Runs Away" where he said that the song "takes back to the good old days". He
played another new one which I forgot the name of, but it was mellower sounding like it could have been on the first record, possible it was the song about Jeff Buckley. The verse of the song stated a bunch of references to famous musicians from the recent past, like "Mr. Lennon etc....Mr. Jagger etc....", the words sound kind of cheesy but the song had much to say, he said before it was about protesting. The second to
last song he played was "Fake Plastic Trees" you may know he loves to play this song, and I think he does a better version than Radiohead. When I first saw him he played the song and said that Radiohead was currently his favorite band. But before he played it he said that it would be the last time that they would play it live, that kind of hurt. To add to the occasion the lead guitarist's son came on and played the song with the band. He closed out the show with "Bite Your Tongue" which is another great song with a lot of power and radio potential. The chorus lines went "Bite your tongue...You're not the only one". And
there the show ended. With the audience including me being the first ones to hear his new songs; he added earlier in a literal but not condecending voince that we were the "test audience" for his new material. But they didn't have a choice anyway since the record had already been finished. But, no need to worry, "Humming" will definitely be a great album.
