Barely Breathing on VH1's Pop-Up Video

Duncan Sheik
Born: November 18, 1969
Place: North Caldwell, NJ
Classmates in high school called him "chic" Duncan Sheik. Duncan's kindergarten classmates called him "Duncan donut".
Fellow students knew him for saying "fashion before comfort". He put comfort before fashion in kindergarten. (Cute picture of him in kindergarten.) In college he played guitar in a band with Lisa Loeb.
He trained with an opera singer for 3 years before singing professionally. Diana Ross heard his demo tape and helped him get his 1st record deal. This video was shot in a warehouse in Queens, NYC.
The video was originally meant to be a tribute to 1980's "Altered States". In that film a man in an isolation tank experiences wild hallucinations. In the original video Duncan experiences "scary hookers and wigged out grandmas".
Duncan felt it was "too alternative". He has described himself as "the alternative to alternative". A love interest was cast to make the video "more conventional".
The directors's only direction to her: (see next bubble) "Put down the cell phone." All the cell phone conversations were overheard by the crew.
She was deciding between "a flight to Paris and a speeboat to the Hamptons." Barely breathing increases chances of passing out. Breathing does not involve thinking - it's an involuntary reflex.
A normal breathing adult breathes 15 times per minute. And breathes 700, 000 cubic inches of breath every day. A bear barely breathes during hibernation - just 4 times per minute.
Why did everyon on the set "hold their breath" for 2 hours? "Chic" was arguing with the record executives - he wanted to wear a tie. Duncan has warned his fans he may get "really pretentious and wear a suit everywhere".
Dick Grayson wore a suit everywhere as the ward of Brue Wayne. "Take My Breath Away"
Berlin -1986
"Every Breath You Take"
The Police -1983
"Stranglehold"
Ted Nugent -1975
Duncan doesn't consider this video "breathtaking". Neither do some critics - the video has been called "free of annoying attempts at creativity".
What was Duncan's least favorite part of making this video? Having a camera "stuck" in his face. (Girl walking down the hallway) On her way to answer her cellphone.
(Duncan walking down hallway) The director told Duncan to follow her. The crew knew from her last cell phone conversation where she was going. She decided on Paris.
Duncan's career started with the sucess of this song. It became the longest runnning chart single of 1997 and garnered him a best pop vocal nomination. But the sudden crush of fame caught up with him. He had to stop touring and catch his breath.
