------------------------INTRODUCTION---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello, my name is Porkchop, founder and head of Tijuana Productions(aka
formerly Porkchop Productions). This is "Snout" our new free internet
zine coming to you weekly(unless you unsubscribe) from a little island I
like to call Man-Hat-Tan. The zine is dedicated to film, music, and
anything else on my mind, mostly concentrating on the ska scene since that
is where most of our audience lies, but we are not a narrow-focused
publications and shall incorporate anything of interest to you or us.
We are basically doing this because our radio show at School of Visual
Arts is over for the summer and we needed some way to keep on with
promotion and exposure, and a real zine is just too expensive, plus via the
internet, I can reach so many more of you.
At Tijuana Productions, we also represent many projects and promote,
review, everything but exploit bands and films that deserve it, as well as
spotlighting the obvious popular pieces of the arts out there. Right now,
we currently represent a ska/rocksteady band from CT, The Radiation Kings;
a punk-ska band from CT, Inward Variation; a silly punk band from NYU, The
Lepers; and the aspiring film careers of P@t Burritt and Barton Campbell.
We will advertise anything for free in the zine since this doesn't cost us
much besides time, and maybe we'll print you an article or something-just
send us a letter at the email addresses at the bottom of the page. Also
check out our many web pages!!! --PORKCHOP

"AN IDOL BY AN OTHER NAME WOULD SMELL..." by PORKCHOP
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This weekend, something I saw taking place disturbed me. I saw some
kids getting the autographs of Spring Heeled Jack and Skavoovie & the
Epitones on the covers of their CDs. Now many present at the time claimed
the bands well deserved this kind of repect. I'd like to disagree.
I have become especially hatred of autographs in the past few years,
after living a childhood once excited about the fact that my family had
Michael Jackson's, Norman Rockwell's, Bette Davis', and my final autograph,
Adam Duritz of Counting Crows. I've always loved meeting celebrities and
autographs was a way to prove to friends that I had done so. Then, I
visited a store near Times Square that had just about every actor and
singer you could think of for sale at outrageous prices, the worst being
$2000 for Sid Vicious' crayoned signature photo. I understood that so many
people were exploiting these people's names on pieces of paper to get lots
of money. That's really wrong.
To me, a name means nothing. I go by so many that I don't even care
what I'm called whether it be Porkchop or Barton or Chris or Fatboy, etc.
They're just labels to identify. They aren't the real deal, Evander
Hollyfield, sorry. An autograph to me was a representation that I was with
the person in the flesh, hopefully got to talk to them. These celebs(in
the better cases) are known for what they did with their minds(often also
bodies) and so that's what should be achieved. Talk to a celeb, hang out
with an idol. Don't disturb them just to have them sign a photo. Don't
try and dig through they're garbage for a copy of something they may have
signed. Get to experience the person, not the name. I have hung out with
Spring Heeled Jack and Skavoovie and the Epitones and these kids could've
as well-most of them are super-nice guys. I talk to famous actors all the
time where I work. Most of them are friendly enough to offer a greeting
and a handshake and maybe a slight moment of themselves that is much more
memorable than a bit of pen and ink. And please, whatever you do, don't
encourage any exploitation by buying an autographed photo from a store or
magazine ad, even if it is authentic, what could it possibly mean to you?

"SODA IS JUST SODA...REALLY" by PORKCHOP
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You know, I don't watch television much. Hate commercials too much.
But recently I've been catching Conan after work. And I keep seeing this
commercial campaign for Diet Coke. One ad features a young girl asking if
Diet Coke will maker her beautiful. Her grandmother points out that she
never drank it. She is very ugly. Proving that Diet Coke will make her
beautiful. And what's with the Italian anyway? The other I've seen once
and features two guys girl watching in the middle of a blizzard. They only
like the ones drinking Diet Coke cause it means their beautiful. Which
means they're also stupid too cause who drinks cold soda during a blizzard?
Anyway, its bad enough kids think that products will improve their
image. Now we have a product that actually uses the campaign "Diet Coke:
You Are What You Drink", which too me would be horrible because I hate the
taste of Diet Coke and I wouldn't want to date girl that tasted like it.
But I hate physical image anyway. I'm not saying to ban this product, I'm
saying trust what your taste is. If you think its gonna make you look good
you're wrong. Though it wont make you as chubby as regualar Coke, diet
soda is even worse for young girls/women because it can contribute to
pimples and ostioperosis.
Its also strange to think that these ads are for the same company that
brings us Sprite which features my favorite campaign lately: "Image is
nothing; Thirst is Everything". I still don't drink Sprite much because
I'm not as big a fan as I used to, but give it props for honesty.

::: NEWS ::::
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--This past weekend, "THE LOST WORLD"(JURASSIC PARK 2) made a record
breaking $92.7 million from 41/2 days(Thursday night previews are
included). It was shown in 3,281 screens nationwide and in
just 3 days accumulated the films budget of $74 million. It now ranks as
the number one weekend opener of all time beating out former champ
"Independence Day"($85 million). The film also proved itself a
review-proof success after getting weak mixed reviews across the nation.
Of course reports are now coming in from surveys that show the film to
be a big disappointment with most audiences, making the return visit
unlikely.
-The James Cameron film "TITANIC", possibly the most expensive film ever
made has rescheduled from July to December 19th due to technical
difficulties.
-GWEN STEFANI, singer of the formerly-known-as-a-ska-band No Doubt, has
signed a contract with a talent agency in Hollywood to begin a film acting
career. Once again, seeming to really want to be Madonna.
-The new "Superman Reborn" is officially going to be directed by TIM
BURTON("Batman"; "Mars Attacks") who is having the script, originally
penned by KEVIN SMITH("Clerks"; "Chasing Amy"), rewritten. The only actor
signed on is NICHOLAS CAGE("The Rock"; "Leaving Las Vegas") as 'Superman'.
Last reported negotiations and rumors included JIM CARREY to play
'Brainiac', SANDRA BULLOCK to play 'Lois Lane', JACK NICHOLSON to play
'Lex Luthor', and MICHAEL KEATON in a cameo as 'Batman'. I am really
disappointed in this whole mess of news.
-JIM CARREY is also in talks to star in the remake of DON KNOTTS' classic
"The Incredible Mr. Limpet" which is just yet another shame.
-Screenwriters LARRY KARASZEWSKI & SCOTT ALEXANDER("Ed Wood"; "Larry
Flynt") are currently penning a biopic of the VILLAGE PEOPLE.
-WILL SMITH("Independence Day") is set to star as MUHAMMED ALI in a new
biopic.

:::REVIEWS:::
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-"THE FIFTH ELEMENT"- [1997, Columbia/Gaumont]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
directed by Luc Besson("The Professional"; "La Femme Nikita")
written by Luc Besson("The Professional") & Robert Mark Kamen("Lethal
Weopon 3") from Besson's story.
starring Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Ian Holm, Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker
I have heard very few good things said about this film. The plot is
weak, Tucker is annoying, etc. I, on the other hand, agree with every
negative thing said about this film, and still love it, and even I am
shocked.
The picture takes place in the future NYC where all the buildings are
higher than even "Blade Runner" and the flying cars are more abundant than
"Back to the Future 2". The military has just discovered a mass threat to
Earth and the rest of the universe in the form of a big ball of pure evil.
Somehow, the only one who can talk to this thing is Gary Oldman as a freak
tycoon who actually thinks he will be awarded great power to end the world.
Milla Jovovich is the 5th element, the one being who can stop the ball.
The rest of the plot is a race against time by each party to get their task
done.
Aside from the swiss-cheesy story, the film is entertaining and I at
least was interested in the entire narrative despite the problems. Maybe
because I expected it to be somewhat simple having been written when Besson
was a teen. Plus, I love Besson's visual style and directing ability, and
trusted him to dazzle me. And he did. His action sequences are first rate
when he utilizes his knack for cross-cutting and his employment of first
rate artists, such as costume designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, is commended.
The acting leaves much to be disired, however. Willis is total 'John
McClane' "Die Hard" stuff. At least he is honest with himself to be that,
though. The rest of the usually fine cast of actors try out annoying
accents, charactures, and voices that are usually uncohesive and unneeded.
The only time Jovovich is really great is when she doesn't speak any
English or trying to get all mushy when she learns what war is.
I recommend this film due to its look mostly, but I have to think that
there are others who will be at least enterntained by the plot as well. I
mean, I usually hate these kinds of movies when done by Hollywood.

-"THE VAN"("The Barrytowns Trilogy Pt. 3")- [1996,Fox Searchlight/BBC]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
dir: Stephen Frears("The Snapper"; "Mary Reilly"; "Dangerous Liasons")
wrt: Roddy Doyle("The Commitments"; "The Snapper") from his novel
cast: Colm Meaney; Donal O'Kelly; Ger Ryan; Caroline Rothwell
"The Van" is a nice little movie. Many people are saying that it
isn't as good as the other two films of its trilogy("The Commitments"; "The
Snapper") but I don't hold that against the film at all. I have only seen
"The Snapper" and actually was more bored with it than this.
The film is about two unemployed Irish suburbians who team up to run a
fish and chips van. Along the way, they discover that its difficult to be
business partners with your best friend. Not a new idea, but
entertainingly portrayed here. It has a lot of charm and Colm Meaney is
hilarious in his role as always(you may be familiar with his role on "Deep
Space Nine"). He is probably the one true recommendation of the film. As
well as the great scenes of the whole town watching the World Cup together.
The film is about loyalty and pride and I think the themes role in Ireland
is very interesting. Not a definite theater must-see, but it shall make a
nice video release. [by Porkchop]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-"LE JOURNAL DU SEDUCTEUR" ("DIARY OF A SEDUCER") [1995, Gemini]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
directed by Daniele Dubroux("La Petite allumeuse")
written by Daniele Dubroux based on the novel by Soren Kierkegaard
starring Chiara Mastrioanni, Melvil Poupaud, Hubert Saint-Macary, Serge
Merlin, Mathieu Amalric, Daniele Dubroux
If you like really weird French films, this one is a must-see. The film
is about a young woman(Mastroianni) who falls in love with a quietly
handsome philosophy student after borrowing his copy of Kierkegaard's
"Diary of a Seducer". She soon learns that her attraction, as well as many
others, is due to a mysterious powers of the book itself. Full of quirky
characters including a young virgin who isn't sure if he's gay or not who
works a experiment out of seducing the young woman's mother. The film is
slow and quiet, but has enough going on to intrigue its audience.

VARIOUS ARTISTS Skankaholics Unanimous (Moon Records)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am not much of a drinker. Okay, fine, I hate the stuff
completely. But, just because a person doesn't drink, they can still
appreciate a compilation dedicated to it as long as the bands are as
talented as the grouping found here.
Ska bands from around the world contributed either new or previously
released odes to alcohol. Much of the music's biggest names from Lower
East Side Buck(Bucket of The Toasters) to The Pietasters to Bad Manners are
here. A variety of sounds as well from the traditional rocksteady of
Bluebeats' cover of the polka classic "In Heaven There Is No Beer";
skinhead oi-ska with Inspecter 7's "Schoochie's Ruin" or Skoidats' "Last
Night"; poppy third-wave with Buford O'Sullivan(of The Scofflaws)'s "I
Can't Decide" or The Busters' "Drinking In the Pubs"; the swingin'
Skavoovie & the Epitones featuring 'Monter' Mike Welch with "Drunk"; the
mellow lounge jazz feel of The Pietasters' "Gin & Tonic" and The
Allstonians "Martini's For Two" and Laurel Aitkens' "Hey, Bartender;
Czechslovkian do-wop of Sto Zvirat's "Glasses(Brejle)"; and the just plain
delightfully weird track "What's the Use" by Skinnerbox.
I especially appreciate the depressing two-tone sound of Magadog's
"The Jitters" with its telling of alcoholic addiction.
Most of the songs, however, are great salutes to the popular past time of
drinking and anyone who loves that will love listening to this compilation,
possibly with a bottle of Guinness or Red Stripe in hand.[by Porkchop]

SKINNERBOX What You Can Do.What You Can't (Moon Records)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you're looking to expand your taste in ska or perhaps just in
music period? Skinnerbox's new album is for you. Skinnerbox is one of New
York City's oldest ska bands and certainly one of the most diverse in
style.
You may be familiar with frontman King Django as the founder of
Stubborn Records and The Stubborn All-Stars. He continues to prove his
devotion to the roots of the music by attempting to educate today's ska
listener to the idea that the original sounds were responses to other
musics such as soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and anything else that
Jamaicans could incorporate.
The album has something for everyone starting with the ska-rock of
"Pushing It" , traditional rocksteady on "Baby", the fabulous toast filled
distortion ska of "Nex Finga", hard rock in "2-Face", big band jazz with
"Ditch Digger", plus a bit of soul, a bit of funk, a bit of punk. Too many
influences could probably be pulled out to count.
They even show that they aren't afraid to experiment and bring ska to new
heights with "Down and Around" and "Stay At Home". And for fans of their
big hit "Addiction", they bring a new version of that as well.
This album is probably one of the only places to find both the ska
past and the ska future together by one band, so I recommend you check
these guys out here or at least on their summer U.S. tour.[by Porkchop]

WEAPON OF CHOICE Hyperspice (Sony/Loosegroove)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even though this album has been out for almost a year, I didn't acquire it
until a few weeks ago. This band is an 8 piece funk outfit from sunny
California. They catergorize their style of music as Nuttmeg, a genre
shared by Fishbone and Trulio Disgracias. The music is heavily influenced
by Sly Stone, P-Funk, Frank Zappa, and of course Fishbone, but don't think
they only play funk, they do some rap ("Glo in da' Dark"), funk rock
("Blindside"), and even reggae ("Just Cuz She Was Nice"). Lyrically, they
are not all that sophisticated and frequently touch on the topics of sex,
Nutts, and deragatory terms. On the other hand their music is both
technically proficient and groovin' hard at the same time and make you want
to dance like a mutha fucka. Of the 15 tracks on this album, the ones that
shine out are "Blindside", "The 'N' Word", and "Count Mackuluv". I suggest
that everybody in this world by this brilliant album, even if you are too
close minded to veer away from your favorite style of music (I ain't namin'
names). [by Nuttmeg Supercrack]

PUNCH THE CLOWN *Each Sold Separately (Raj Records)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This has been out since '96 I guess but they sent it to me recently,
and boy am I glad!!! I believe this album to be the best third-wave-sound
album since The Planet Smashers. Of course I shouldn't call them
third-wave really because they incorporate so many sounds. There is a bit
of surf, some traditional, some Latin influence, some rock-love ballad, but
a lot of it sounds like a cross between Planet Smashers and Isaac Green.
The male and female vocals whether separate or duet are incredible. The
lyrics are both smart and funny. Some great tracks to check out are "Love
James" which features a girl reading a letter from an ex-boyfriend; the
emotional rock-ska tune "I Give Up"; the diverse dual vocals on "Nautical
Holiday" and of course the bonus track party showtune about
masturbation("punching the clown") featuring their acting talents. I'd
love to get these guys in my film! Go buy this album if you love what I've
explained. [by Porkchop]

:::SHOW REVIEWS:::
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-SKINNERBOX/SLACKERS/RADIATION KINGS @ The Continental, NYC, 5/8/97
Well, thanks to those few of you who showed up. Most were guests of
the bands from what I could tell. The Radiation Kings didn't play their
best anyway(nor their worst) so don't worry. They went through their usual
songs, but at the end, during the crowd fav, "Georgetown Stomp", JOSH's
guitar amp went out and so the song sounded more like a skinhead jazz song
than ska. But it was fun as usual.
The Slackers were great as usual, playing most of their usual tracks
with a few added covers like "Hang On Sloopy" and "La Bamba". Skinnerbox
was also in fine shape, with Vic of the Slackers doing guest keyboard and
Josh and SLIM JIM of the Radiation Kings joining me on back vocals during
"Penny Reelo".

-MOON'S "SKA WARS" with (Day 1)TEDIO BOYS/DOUGLAS LEADER ORCHESTRA/
INDEPENDENTS/CHERRY POPPIN DADDIES/INSTEPS/RUDER THAN YOU/SPRING HEELED
JACK (Day 2) SKABBA THE HUTT/PUBLIC SERVICE/HI-HATS/SMOOTHS/EDNA'S
GOLDFISH/SKINNERBOX/SKAVOOVIE & THE EPITONES
@ Wetlands, NYC 5/24/97 & 5/25/97
The first day, I got to the show to meet JOSH SUITSKIN of Radiation Kings
and some other people that didn't show up. Tedio Boys went on first and
aren't ska. They were Porkabilly from Portugal(Noah got in trouble by
calling them Spanish). They weren't too bad, with a drummer resembling an
older version of Inward Variation's JON SHAFT. I couldn't believe when they
invited all the skanking kids on stage(skank to rockabilly?) The D.L.O.
featured JOE FATERINI of the ska radio show "Sausage Party" on sax, which
surprised me. They weren't the best, but they did some nice covers of
"Inspector Gadgit", "Blitzgrieg Bop" and "Sally Brown" as well as some fine
originals "Brocktoon" about Mr. Belvedere and "Another Train".
The Independents did a no show, as they also had the night before in New
Haven. The Cherry Poppin Daddies belted out a nice set of swing and ska
which I somewhat enjoyed, not comparing to Skavoovie or Los Hooligans still
and still playing bad rock-ska-punk mixed in too much. The Insteps were
wonderful as usual when they finally got all the members(they went on early
because of the no-show band). I missed most of Ruder Than You cause I dont
like them but Josh says they did a nice cover of "Rockfort Rock".
Spring Heeled Jack brought on the young kids, including my friend DAVE
CRUST of Inward Variation. They did their usual stuff that I dont like and
the kids did their annoying skank dances which they pay more attention to
than the band itself. The next day was better.
Sunday was another slow start when Skabba the Hutt couldn't play since
most of their members were too late. Hi Hats went on first and though I
don't usually dig their sound, they were better than usual. Public Service
featured all different members and played so-so except for the great song
"Gimme All Your Money". The Smooths with Quentin Tarantino's twin on
vocals played what I call "squeak ska" which happens when too many
instruments are blaring at high volume at once causing me to mainly hear a
high pitched squeak sound coming from the stage. Edna's Goldfish were
their okay rockin' selves. I love the singer's energy most of all.
Skinnerbox, who I usually am not into that much, were great. Maybe its
because Josh loves them so much and his excitement can rub off on me. But
I did enjoy most of their song, and didn't feature any "squeak ska"
elements like I've noticed in the past. Once again Josh and I sang backup
on "Penny Reelo". And Rocker T, of The Skadanks did a great guest-toast
and they brought on one of Skavoovie's sax players a few times too.
Skavoovie was incredible as always. They played nearly all of their
songs from the new album("Ripe") as well as the best from "Fat Footin" and
a great cover of Skatalites' "Beardman". Everyone was having fun at this
time, swinging and skanking together as Ans scatted us along Calloway
style.

:::THIS WEEK'S RECOMMENDED MAGAS/ZINES:::
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-MIND TOILET Vol. 3 Number 5: This NYC based ska zine is a nice read with
many articles about anything besides ska, except for guest writer Noah
Wildman. Plus always great contributors Alison Wonderland, Adam Coozer
(of Two Left Feet fame), and Oberc. Except for when they're all
critizing each other. The format/production is getting very pro and has
nice photos and quality for free. The reviewing could be a little better
in the ways that certain people make quotes like " a good trad ska band
considering there's no horns".[PO Box 6132, L.I.C.,NY 11106-2866]
-NEW ENGLAND HOOLIGAN Volume 1 Issue 2: Spring 97: I'm not much into
the whole skinhead thing. I don't know most of the bands in the zine
either, but I have to say that it's one of the nicest skin zines I've
ever seen. Of course it costs $2, but it is worth it probably. 31 pages
of articles, ads, photos, reviews, interviews(Bottom of the Barrel, All
Systems Stop, The Trouble, Dropkick Murphys, The Ducky Boys, Big Bad
Bollocks) and other political shit.[638 Congress St.#606, Portland, ME
