"ABSOLUTE POWER"(Clint Eastwood, dir; Clint Eastwood,Gene Hackman; 1997; R; 2:00; not seen) Murder conspiracy in the white house. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "ALL OVER ME"(Alex Sichel, dir; Sylvia Sichel, wrt; Allison Folland; Tara Subikoff,Cole Hauser,Wilson Cruz; 1997; R; 1:30 ; **) A coming of age story about a 15 year old girl comes to realize that she's in love with her best friend, who's a girl. Good moments are wasted in this tale of "chix dig jerks" theme because it cuts away when a scene gets near powerful; Folland has promise but not in this dud. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "ANACONDA"(Luis Llosa, dir; Ice Cube, Jon Voigt,Eric Stoltz,Jennifer Lopez; 1997; PG13; 1:30 ; not seen) A documentary film crew gets attacked by a big snake in South America; RIYL: goofy looking special effects [Columbia Pictures] ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ "ANNA KARENINA"(Bernard Rose, dir; Sophie Marceau; Sean Bean; Alfred Molina,Mia Kirshner,James Fox; 1997; PG; 1:45; seen bits) Leo Tolstoy's period dramatic love story. Beautiful looking but I don't like period dramas enough to see it.; RILY: Russian period drams.[Warner Bros.] ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ "AUSTIN POWERS:INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY"(Jay Roach, dir; Mike Myers, wrt; Mike Myers,Elizabeth Hurley,Robert Wagner,Mimi Rogers,Michael York; 1997; PG13; 1:27; ** 1/2) Satire on 60's spy movies with Austin Powers revived from cryogenics after 30 years to defeat his nemises Dr. Evil. Very funny at parts of the script but the editing and comic timing of the director and actors mess up the rhythm. Myers as Dr. Evil is genius and Powers is fun too, though the rest of the cast, esp. Hurley are dreadful.[New Line] .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. "BOOTY CALL"(Jeff Pollack, dir; Jamie Foxx, Tommy Davidson, Vivica A. Fox, Tamala Jones; 1997; R; 1:17; not seen) Two guys try to get a little somthing from two foulmouthed women who insist on safe sex. Said to be very stereotypical and vulgar. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "BRASSED OFF"(Mark Herman, dir; Ewan McGregor,Pete Postlewaite,Stephen Tompkinson; not seen) A brass band is trying to win national championships during the harsh conervative reign in England. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "BREAKDOWN"(Jonathan Mostow, dir; Kurt Russell,Kathleen Quinlan,JT Walsh; 1997; R; 1:53; not seen) A newlywed couple are on vacation on their way to home in San Diego when the breakdown in Texas. Amy, the wife, vanishes when she offers to go to town for help. Very suspenseful. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ "BROKEN ENGLISH"(Gregor Nicholas, dir; Rade Serbedzija,Aleksandra Vujcic,Julian Arahanga,Marton Czokas; 1997; NC-17; 1:32; not seen) A Croatian drug lord's daughter falls in love with a Maori native in New Zealand against her father's wishes. Features an all-too-realistic sex scene. .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "CHASING AMY"(Kevin Smith["Clerks"],wrt/dir; Joey Lauren Adams, Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Kevin Smith, Dwight Ewell,Jason Mewes;1997; R; 1:45; ***) A comic creator falls in love with a lesbian who eventually falls in love back, ruining his relationship with his comic book partner and best friend. Mildy entertaining, honestly funny movie about really stupid people in a stupid situation. The only great thing about the film is Jason Lee, the most honest and rude of the bunch and the movie is funny enough and cute enough for video recommendation. Unfortunately gives the impression that lesbians are easily transformed strait. RILY: "Mallrats", screwball romantic comedies.[Miramax] ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ "A CHEF IN LOVE"(Nana Djordjadze, dir; Pierre Richards,Michelle Presle,Nino Kirtadze; In French/Georgian/Russian; 1997; NR; 1:40; not seen) A French scoundrel and chef, his affair with a Georgian princess and his defeat by the barbaric Revolutionary soldiers. Nominated for best foriegn film. [Sony Pictures Classics] ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION"(Peter Duncan, dir; Judy Davis,Geoffrey Rush,F. Murray Abraham,Sam Neill; 1997; R; 1:41; ***) Documentary-styled satire about the leader of The Australian Communist Party and the son she had with Stalin. Nice performances and great satire if you know the history of communism and the USSR. I especially like the commentary on Gorbachev's reign. [Miramax] .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "CRASH"(David Cronenberg["Naked Lunch"],wrt/dir; Holly Hunter,James Spader, Rosanna Arquette,Deborah Unger,Elias Koteas; 1996;; NC-17; 1:38; **) J.G. Ballard's tale of a couple who gets involved in a strange cult involving sex and car crashes. From what I've watched, I dislike the film mainly because I hate watching sex and crashes are more entertaining if I see them for real or if I'm in them. The dialogue is horrible, but I give the same kind of credit to Cronenberg as Cannes and say it is a daring work of art, just one I don't want to watch. RILY: a little art with your porn.; {Cannes Special Prize for daring and audacity}[Fine Line] ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ "DAYTRIPPERS"(Gregg Motolla,wrt/dir; Hope Davis,Campbell Scott, Stanley Tucci, Anne Meara,Pat McNamara,Parker Posey,Liev Shrieber; 1997; NR; 1:22; ***) Worried that her husband is cheating on her, a woman brings her family into the city to confront him. A nice small indie film that has entertaining moments and some alright perfomances, but leaves you with nothing. It's just kind of there. Davis and Scott are both great. Recommended for possible video rental. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ "THE DESIGNATED MOURNER"(David Hare, dir; Wallace Shawn["My Dinner With Andre"],wrt; Mike Nichols,Miranda Richardson,David de Keyser; 1997; R; 1:31; not seen) A man who married into the cultural elite, then betrayed them when things got nasty. All dialogue is forcing many walkouts. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... *"DIARY OF A SEDUCER"(Daniele Dubroux, dir; Chiara Mastroianni,Melvil Poupard; French; 1995; NR; 1:35; ***1/2) A psychology student finds a package containing a copy of Kierkegaard's "Diary of a Seducer" which begins to exert a mysterious, magical power over the woman and those around her. This is a delightfully weird and somewhat fantasy. Slow at times, but always interesting. Good Performances, the daughter of two legends is soon to be great herself.[Liesure Time Features] .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... *"DONNIE BRASCO"(Mike Newell[Four Weddings and a Funeral].dir; Johnny Depp,Al Pacino,Michael Madsen,Anne Heche,Bruno Kirby; 1997; R; 2:01; ***) An FBI agent goes undercover to infiltrate the mafia and becomes too involved. Recommended for its remarkable performances from Depp and Pacino, the film otherwise gives nothing great besides showing the lowest of mafia life and the most idiocy of the FBI. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ "THE ENGLISH PATIENT"(Anthony Minghella,wrt/dir; Ralph Fiennes, Kristen Scott Thomas,Juliette Binoche,Willem Dafoe,Colin Firth; 1996; R; 2:39; ** 1/2) Academy Award winner for best picture. Tale of love and war during WWII when an unidentified "English" patient is cared for by a nurse. Flashbacks tell the patient's romantic adventure while the nurse has her own. Very beautiful yet complex confusing and boring drama. Wonderful cinematography and acting but the story is full of holes that you don't have to read the novel to know they're missing. {ACADEMY AWARD winner for best picture, best director, supporting actress Juliette Binoche, cinematography, art direction, costumes, editing, sound, and more}[Miramax] ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "FATHER'S DAY"(Ivan Reitman["Twins"],dir; Babaloo Mandel & Lowell Ganz["Parenthood"],wrt; Billy Crystal,Robin Williams,Julia Louis-Dreyfuss,Natassja Kinski,Bruce Greenwood,Charlie Hofheimer; 1997; PG; 1:40; not seen) After a woman's son runs away, she tells two men that they are the father and must find him. They end up teaming together. Getting horrible reviews from everyone. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ "FEMALE PERVERSIONS"(Susan Streitfeld, dir; Tilda Swinton,Amy Madigan,Karen Sillas,Frances Fisher; 1997; R; 1:56; not seen) Adaptation of Louise J. Kaplan's psychoanalytitic book about a CA prosecutor who finds release confronting her sexual fantasies together with her shoplifting sister and assorted friends. [October Films] ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "FETISHES"(Nick Broomfield, dir; 1997; NR; 1:26; not seen) Documentary set in Pandora's Box, a fetish palace atop a Manhattan office building. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... *"THE FIFTH ELEMENT"(Luc Besson["La Femme Nikita"],dir; Bruce Willis,Milla Jovovich,Ian Holm,Gary Oldman,Chris Tucker; 1997; R; 2:07; ***) Set in 23rd Century New York and elsewhere, a cab driver must help a beautiful and powerful 'fifth element' save the world from a ball of evil. The plot is pretty lame but not much worse than other Hollywood these days. At least this film features fantastic set and costume design, entertaining cross-cut editing, and impressive effects. The acting leaves much to be desired with everyone but Willis doing some strange voice and characture. Fun to watch if nothing more. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "FLAMENCO"(Carlos Saura["Carmen,Blood Wedding"],dir; Vittorio Storaro["Apocalypse Now"],photo.; 1995; NR; 1:40; not seen) Documentary on flamenco dancing.[New Yorker Films] ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "FOUR MILLION HOUSEGUESTS"(Paul Cox,dir; Charlotte Sullivan,C.David Johnson,Gosia Dobrowolska; 1997; NR; 0:45; not seen) IMAX 3-D film about a girl who finds a supermicroscope at her scientist-grandfather's house, which allows her to explore the world of miniscule organisms. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... *"GROSSE POINTE BLANK"(George Armitage["Miami Blues"],dir; John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Joan Cusack, Dan Aykroid,Alan Arkin; 1997; R; 1:47; ***1/2) A hit-man decides to go to his 10 yr. high school reunion and tries to give up his job to be with his high school sweetheart. Very funny slapstick and superb comic timing from Cusack in his return to comedy. Creatively written. Really off -the- wall characters straight out of a John Hughes teen film all grown up. Nice 80s/ska sountrack. RIYL: "Sixteen Candles", "Better Off Dead"; Luc Besson hitmen funny style. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ *"IRMA VEP"(Olivier Assayas, dir; Maggie Cheung,Jean-Pierre Leaud,Nathalie Richard; In French/English; 1996; NR; 1:36; *** ) Cheung plays herself as an actress recruited for a remake of the silent film "Les Vampires". Very funny at points and very likeable characters. A little slow at times, but mostly entertaining look at troubled film making. .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "JERRY MAGUIRE"(Cameron Crowe["Singles"],wrt/dir; Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger, Cuba Gooding, Jr.; 1996; R; 2:15; ***) A sports agent is fired and must rise back to glory as well as keep the woman he loves. An entertaining if sappy romantic film with strong performances all around, yet a little too Cruise for me. Zellweger is wonderful and her on screen son is not too annoyingly cute. Not a brilliant film, but not bad for Hollywood. {ACADEMY AWARD for best supporting actor Cuba Gooding Jr.}{Porkchop Award for Best supporting actress,Rennee Zellweger} ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "KAMA SUTRA:A TALE OF LOVE"(Mira Nair["Mississippi Masala"],dir; Indira Varma,Naveen Andrews,Sarita Choudhury, Ramon Tikaram,Naveem Andrews; 1997; NR; 1:55; not seen); 16th century India is portrayed in the adaption of an ancient guide to sex. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... *"KOLYA"(Jan Sverak, dir; Zdenek Sverak,Andrej Chalimon,Libuse Safrankova,Ondrez Vetchy; In Czech; 1997; NR; 1:50; ****) An old cranky fellow has his life turned around when he is paid to wed a woman for her to immigrate and is then left with her small son. Great film with many levels as a comment to Soviet control in Czechoslovakia in the last decade. Nice performances all around espcially from the young adorable boy. This is the kind of film that makes me love going to the movies. {ACADEMY AWARD winner best picture, foreign} ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "LA PROMESSE"(Luc & Jean-Pierre Dardenne, dir; Jeremie Renier,Olivier Gourmet,Assita Ouedraogo; In French; 1996; NR; 1:33; not seen) A 15 year old boy lives his repulsive father who trains his son to be an even bigger rat than himself. A really fun film if you convince yourself that you know what's going on, Lynch serves up some great surreal moments and a creative circular plot. His best film that I've ever seen even if the acting could be better. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "LOST WORLD:JURASSIC PARK"(Steven Spielberg("Jaws"; "Hook"),dir; Jeff Goldblum,Julieanne Moore,Vince Vaugn,Pete Postlewaite; 1997; PG-13; 2:14; **) A second dino-island is revealed causing some businessmen and some scientists to make opposing plans for their exploitation, eventually leading to T-Rex's in downtown San Diego. Not a great achievement from Spielberg, but a 'get what you should expect' bunch of exciting and grossly funny scenes of CGI dinos; an always fun Goldblum; and some really really stupid people trapped in a post-modern world. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "LOVE JONES"(Theodore Witcher, dir; Larenz Tate,Nia Long,Isaiah Washington,Leonard Roberts,Bernadette Clark,Bill Bellamy; 1997; R; 1:53; not seen) A writer struggling on his first novel gets with a photographer, but jealousy and missed opportunities nix their relationship. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... [Warner Brothers] ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "NIGHT FALLS ON MANHATTAN"(Sidney Lumet["Dog Day Afternoon"],dir; Andy Garcia,Lena Olin,Ron Leibman; 1997; R; 1:53; not seen) A fast-rising assistant D.A. is handpicked to prosecute a drug kingpin who shot his father. The trial unleashes hints of corruption in the NYPD. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. "NOWHERE"("TEEN APOCALYPSE" Pt.3)(Gregg Araki["The Doom Generation"],dir; James Duval,Rachel True,Nathan Bexton,Kathleen Robertson,Christina Applegate,Chiara Mastroianni; 1997; R; 1:25; not seen) 19 characters are followed through one day in a surreal L.A. .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "PINK FLAMINGOES" 25TH ANNIVERSARY CUT(John Waters["Hairspray"],wrt/dir; Divine; 1972; NC17; 1:47; **; not completely seen) The competition between two families to be the most disgusting on earth. Cult status for its truly revolting scenes including one where Divine eats shit on camera.[Fine Line] ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "PONETTE"(Jacques Doillon, dir; Victoire Thivisol; French; 1996; NR; 1:32; not seen) A four year-old girl deals with the death of her mother. Everyone's least favorite of the trilogy is back with a horrible new CGI/muppet muscial number added to Jabba's palace and a great celebration ending added at the end. I will always love the Ewoks though they're appearance makes this film taken less seriously. The final confrontation between Luke and Darth Vader is good. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW"(Tim Curry,Susan Sarandon,Barry Bostwick,Meat Loaf; **1/2) Cult midnight film about a lost couple who find they're way into a strange house with tranvestites, freaks, and aliens- who sing and dance. Only fun if you know the whole cult routine. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. "ROMY AND MICHELLE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION"(David Mirkin, dir; Mira Sorvino,Lisa Kudrow,Jeneane Garafalo; 1997; R; 1:31; **1/2) Two roomates realize they're lives are meaningless when they go to their high school reunion and try and look accomplished. A retro-80s film. Entertainly funny with great chemistry between the leads. Bizarre characters and situations but a bit stupid and cheesy at times. [Touchstone Pictures] ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "ROUGH MAGIC"(Claire Peploe, dir; Bridget Fonda; 1997; not seen) A magician's assistant realizes she has real powers ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... One of the best films of 1996. The story is beautiful and warm and Thornton's performance is very memorable. Slow paced at times and somewhat long, but a touching piece of cinema. {ACADEMY AWARD winner best original screenplay. Porkchop Award winner best actor Billy Bob Thornton} ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Very charming end to the trilogy with another great performance from Meaney and an heartwarming tale about pride and loyalty. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... *"VOLCANO"(Mick Jackson, dir; Tommy Lee Jones,Anne Heche,Gaby Hoffman; ***) Volcano disaster film number two. This time the big earthquake unleashes volcanic lava upon downtown Los Angeles. Suspenseful and exciting with a better script than most recent disaster films. Many predictable moments and cookie cutter formula scenes, but a good ride if you want one.[20th Century Fox] ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "WAITING FOR GUFFMAN"(Christopher Guest, dir; Christopher Guest & Eugene Levy, wrt; Christopher Guest,Eugene Levy,Parker Posey,Catherine O'Hara,Fred Willard; 1997; R; 1:23; ***) Mockumentary about a musical revue for the town of Blaine, MO. The characters are hilarious and the movie is almost brilliantly funny at times, but it tends to be uneven at times with a slumping second half. The end credits are classic however. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "WARRIORS OF VIRTUE"(Ronny Yu,dir; Angus MacFadyen,Mario Yedidia,Marley Shelton,Chao-Li Chi; 1997; PG; 1:43; not seen) A young boy is sent to a land full of the leftover kangaroo people from "Tank Girl" ..........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
