<Travis> industrial god? hmm... autechre mainly, if that isnt noticed allready.. aphex twin, and somewhat underworld
how do you feel about radiohead? any perticular guitar bands you draw influence from?
<Travis> well i love the chords that radiohead uses, as well as smashing
pumpkins in which i forgot to mention as one of my influences
any plans for a live show?
<Travis> we were planning to play the 1st avenue, it closed down,
sharkys we didnt want to mess with becuase of the redneck drunks that hang
out there, a end of summer party show was planned and scheduled, but the
party got cancelled.... but we are still looking for somewhere
i see... what kind of gear do you use?
<Travis> hmm..
well with keyboards we use a yamaha cs1x, kurzweil k2000, a weird
casio ct 655.. we have a boss sampler, sp 202. we love to use rebirth effects,
and impulse tracker for drum loops. weve also been known to use axs for
many songs
how do you feel about sampling?
<Travis> it matters what you sample really.... like what someone
else has done and you sample is ok, just not when you over do it and make
an entire song based around that sample, different drum noises and drum
loops are excusable but ambient textures sampled outside are fine
its all about originality, to an extent..
have you ever been alone with a woman?
<Travis> yes, many a time, only one though
is there a new syndrone tape in the making?
<Travis> since ben and i have yet to release an actual tape or anything, we are still writing alot, but alot of it doesnt soudn right with another song. we do many long improvisations, that have good parts. we might take out those parts and use them as songs alone. time will tell...
so I take it syndrone will always lack vocals...
<Travis> well for now, id love to incorporate vocals, just not right
now. im not good with the lyrics off the top of my head
ah... i see. where do you see
syndrone going in the next 5 years?
<Travis> hopefully somewhere.... i know we wont go far, ben will probably not be fully in syndrone for the long run, but for now hes hanging on, but i can see syndrone going back to solo sometime
do you see the possibility of incorperating special guests into your tapes? somewhat like pigface?
<Travis> actually we do that, not very special guests, but we let others join in any time they wish. the final product isnt always good, but its fun
what people would you like to have guest on a syndrone album... if you could have any one.
<Travis> hmm, definately rob brown and shawn booth of autechre, erik paradis(process16 and zthemus creation) as well because it seems we would work very well together
have you ever been arrested?
<Travis> cant say that i have, havent done anything wrong , so id hope not
as far as musical direction, do you think too many guitar bands are going industrial these days? I heard you mentioned smashing pumpkins, their latest adore is quite techno.
<Travis> well, not industrial really, but i hear more and more electronic influences, and i can see in the not really near, but sometime in the future everything being electronic. smashing pumpkins being one of the biggest examples right now
so, going industrial is a good thing?
<Travis> yes and no, some bands arent meant for that sound
yet
some bands when incorporating synthesizers or some kinda of electronic
instrument, it sounds perfect, and i like the direction smashing pumpkins
are going
what is your opinion on rammstein? they are pretty mainstream at the moment..
<Travis> well, they can keep on doing what they are doing, but im not going to listen. i just dont understand why mtv jumped all over it, when there were so many other great acts out there
exactly.. bands such as ministry..
<Travis> yes, who i hear alot of in rammstein
as long as we are on the subject.. do you see much guitar being part of syndrone in the future?
<Travis> not really, maybe somthin with acoustic guitar, i have expiremented with my fender and a flanger, it was very interesting, but not really syndrone
what kind of atmosphere will there be at a syndrone show?
<Travis> a very dark one, i dont want people to focus on us, i want the focus on the music, altough i do want very hypnotizing lighting effects, in which we use in videos right now, preferably we would like toplay outside
videos?
<Travis> yes, we have made 3 videos of live improvisation, it is quite interesting
is art a big part of your music? do you draw influence from any particular philosopher or writer?
<Travis> yes , i think that backgrounds or atmospheric pictures influence heavily, especially paintings of the desert in which inspired erg chech climb 5
I've heard some pretty strange drum tracks in your music... is this an experiment? or a signature sound...
<Travis> well, the drums are meant to be very original, and we try to stay away from drum beats that have been used, we also love to tweak with how the drum track sounds, like effects and the such, rather than the instruments. so id have to say both.
in closing, what do you want to accomplish with syndrone
<Travis> only the sound that i like, and hopefully others will come
to like it in the future, preferabbly the near future
