SHOW REVIEWS

April 18th, 1998 @ Palo Alto Teen Center

We almost didn't end up going to this show because we ended up in scenic East Palo Alto. However we arrived in time to catch the end of Betty's Love Child's act. The room was packed(It couldn't have been much more than 25' by 10') and it seemed more like a puppet show than a concert. No dancing at this one,but we had a very comfy couch.Brandon was jumping off the amps this time and Kevin even got into the antics, performing the cup smashing this time. The crowd pretty much cleared after Betty's Love Child, which was pretty harsh, but it was their loss since the guys put on their best show I've seen in a long while, and even posed for pictures after=)

April 4th, 1998 @ Streetlight Records

It's amazing what a busride across town can do.We spent 2 hours walking and on the bus to get to this show, making it during the soundcheck. Eddie was guest guitarist playing alongside Kevin...injecting a bit of life into the show, hopping around like SId Vicious and giving stickers and candy to the kids in the crowd. They played Romper Stomper,Killing You,Nothing,Age,Pathetic,Denny's Girl,Stand Tall,Ode To me,and others. The sound was great and they were really kool with everyone after the show.A Good time was had by all and new and old fans alike were turned on to their music for the first time and quite possibly the hundreth time. Thanks to Mrs Field's in Campbell for the styrofoam cup for the cup smashing=)

Ok, I got to streetlight before basically everyone so I looked around for a while and got bored. Then I saw BKG setting up in the corner. I talked to them for a while and met Eddie, the extra guitarist for that show. Then the wait began. All the flyers that were sent out said 3:30 and the banner at StreetLight said 4:00 so they waiting till 4 to play which sucked but once they started and the slackers showed up, it was a great show. They played Stand Tall (as a sound test) Cuntamination, We are the Now, and basically all of them cept for the "stupid ones" (Grocery Store song, Tune In Toyko ect..) and much to my dismay, they didn't play White Riot. Kevin had a big bag of little plastic bubbles with candy in them and was handing them out, which I thought was cool even though all the bubbles I snagged had sucky candy in it so I gave em away. The show went very well. I could hear all the instruments fine (Yes even the bass!) and Eddie added a nice sound to em. Plus, seeing that the price was FREE, it was a show ya shouldn't have missed.

April 4th 1998 @ Camden Teen Center

Now seeing BKG only once in 1 day is never enough so I had to go see em again at Camden that Night. I hitched a ride and sponged some money off my friends Sam and Helen and headed on over. When we got there Mad Drama was setting up, the first band of the night. They were, I thought anyways, a damn good band, but no one was there yet and everyone was pretty lazy so they didn't get a pit going or anything but they still kicked ass! I'd love to see em again. The last song they played was there only hardcore song and it was the best so if anyone from Mad Drama reads this, GO HARDCORE! Then BKG was up, and people started showing up. Odd how that seems to happen. Well they played most of their songs, except for the same ones that they left out at StreetLight and sounded even better. I got to do some singing with em (Thanks again for letting me up guys) but from what I heard no one in the crowd could hear me. Damn. But it was still fun. Kevin threw the last of the candy bubbles at people and the place was a dump. Little broken plastic bubbles everywhere! During one of the songs, I forget which, Eddies guitar broke and he started just kinda moping around the stage. Then out of no where, hes dives off into 3 people and starts an instant pit and 4 guys all hit him at once. In less than 2 seconds a huge riotish pit broke out and it rocked! There were 2 guys in particular who were really getting an ass whooping in the pit, and I salute those 2. They got nailed alot. After BKG stepped down, P.O.P.S came up, then MORE people showed up! This was my first time seeing them, and they were really good. Another band I'd like to see again. One of the funniest fuckin things I saw was one of the band members was putting up a banner on the back wall of P.O.P.S and he didn't even realize that he put it backwards! They certainly live up too their name, but some fans told him and him switched it around. I dunno what the songs were the played, but they played alot, and they were all good. Then Nothing Substantial was suppose to play. Im still not sure what the hell happened but appearently, only half the band showed up and alot of weird shit went on. They had some guys from P.O.P.S playing instruments they dont know how to play, singers who were rappers, and some guy from the crowd got up and started singing some stuff. Then everyone left, the end of the show kinda fell apart. Overall, a great show, and another great perforance from BKG, Keep it up guys!

February 20th, 1998 @ Mt. View Senior Center

My second time going to a local show. The B-Sides were the first band and gave a stunning performance for a typical...no solo....45 second song punk band, with a kickass drummer to boot. The lead singer,Rory, was a stunning showman, throwing himself around and jumping off the amps while yelling into a microphone that didn't seem to do it's job.The highlight of their set was a cover of the Black Flag song Gimme Gimme Gimme. After their set they sold their $2 demo (worth not a cent more or less) and Rory intrigued me with his stories of the punk rock lifestyle(the highlight being Jessie from the Criminals spitting in the drummers face). After I avoided him for a while, Anti-45 came on. They were a ska act and seemed to get the crowd dancing and enjoying themselves, even though it took them about 45 minutes longer than they should've taken to start playing, since some members of the band were late. After them, Boy Kicks Girl took over, playing We Are The Now, Denny's Girl,Killing You,I still Believe,Romper Stomper, Age, Anti-Social Girl and Cuntamination.I set up Brandon for the cup smashing this time. Pathetic got the crowd starting a small mosh pit which sent the anal-retentive supervisor to go into a tizzy since, heaven forbid, we should destroy something.Brett assured us they would never play there again.

January 3rd, 1998 @ Tiffany's Party

My first Boy Kicks Girl show, and one of the best as well. I came expecting something completely different than what I got...partially do to others stories about the band. However, the guys provided the best value Taco Bell food has ever bought. They tuned up on We Are The Now and that pretty much had me hooked. They were especially friendly and the sound quality was awesome for a garage....despite the vocals being a bit on the low side.Pathetic,Killing You,Denny's Girl and Tune In Tokyo(Despite Kevin not wanting to play it)as well as many others. It was a great party and everyone had a lot of fun...even if it was a going away party. We also got free stickers and other Kool stuff. They proved they had the best PR of probably any local band here.Brett even let a few of us play on his set.Not bad at all for a show in a garage, maybe the best.
