GAME DAY
March 19, 1999 (Friday)
I stayed home from school( My friends Cathy and Shanel went, but left during lunch) to make sure I'd be ready for our 1 o'clock leave time. Lo' and behold me, the Queen of Lateness, took all day to get ready so we didn't get there until about 6:30 or 7:00.
O.K., so the arrival plan was shot, but I was sure we'd have our chance. While my mom was driving around around she spotted the B102.7 van across the street from the MCI Center. We opened the doors to jump out- into moving traffic non-the-less, but my mom( the only one with good sense at the time) made us wait until she pulled over to the side of the road. We immediately hopped out and ran over to the van and crowd of girls who were screaming infront of it. We stood on the side of the van, next to the doors. In the hopes that Carson( not from MTV) would see us. Well we screamed and screamed for the free stuff, but his eyes stayed focused straight infront of him. I decided, to give my brother, X., my bookbag and put my youngest brother, J., on my shoulders. They gave away old backstage passes- they were for earlier that day, T-shirts, videos and everything. Finally a girl who had won a pair of tickets earlier decided to give them back. This was our chance!- Or at least that's what I thought. Snubbed once again. After screaming and jumping up and down for what we thought was a t-shirt Carson pointed to my little bro and told me to send him into the van. I did, but then I started thinking "Oh...(fill in the blank)! What did I just do, because my mom left to find a parking spot. If he left with him I wouldn't know where the heck they went. He pulled two more people into the van and (they had them say why they wanted backstage passes. My little bro said" So I can go with my big sister"- which was really cute because he was shy and Carson had to repeat it for him. Why can't he be like this all the time!) had the crowd scream for who they thougt should get tickets to go to Tatyana Ali's meet and greet.( Come on you didn't think I met *N SYNC did you?! Maybe next time. Anyways...) There was a tie between my brother and a girl who looked like she was 12yrs. old. So Carson had everyone vote again to break the tie. It sounded like a tie again( truthfully I kinda think she won), but Carson was the tie breaker and he chose my brother. Finally, my mom came back and I told her what had happened and he came over and spoke to her. I was already ready to give my other brother, X., the other pass, but Carson told me an adult had to go backstage with J.( I was only 15, but he meant me. Even though it was a let down he gave us plenty of things trying to make up for it.) So we waited until he finished passing out free-bees and Carson took us over to the MCI Center ticket booth to get the passes. X. was bumming hard so I was frantically trying to find a way for him to get to go. The girl who had given her tickets away was going backstage( Carson liked her honesty since she already had tickets), I asked her and her friend to be their chaperones since I was giving the pass to X. and they needed an adult- she was 12. Carson was running around the entire time( 10 or 15 min.) and when I told him my idea he acted like he was way too busy to talk to me, but he made sure he got out a quick "No!". Eventually he came back over to us and said that he was trying to get my little bro X. into the meet and greet, but he didn't want to say anything until he was sure. So we walked to the entrance of a stairwell and talked to he made sure again that it was O.K. to bring X. back with Tatyana's publicist. I'm assuming that's what he was.( He kind of looked, Winer, the the male attorney from The Blame Game on MTV) He said sure and we walked into the stairwell. Now let me tell you why you shouldn't even bother attempting to sneak backstage. There was a guard at the door outside one inside and about two more- one for each landing. Once we reached the bottom of the staircase we had to wait for *N SYNC's meet and greet to end. That was pure torture! Anyway when we walked through the door to the hallway the guy who looked like Winer stepped of to the side of the door with cellphone and said "I have to call my people." My brothers and I started laughing. It's not something you here from people everyday. So we went down the hall and filed into a room with about 4 long tables and lots of chairs. My brothers and I sat at the last table in the back that was next to another entrance. In the room was dressed nicely in either black or some other dark color, except for the girl who gave the tickets back and her friend.(Hint!Hint! For people trying to get backstage passes.) While we waited Carson was extremely nice. He made jokes to pass the time, but my brothers didn't say much because they're really shy around adults. We waited probably about 30min. for Tatyana to come in and eveyone was on pins and needles. There was a phone in the back of the room were near where I were sitting and it got so bad that everytime this woman would hang it everyones head would turn simultaneously towards the back door. Eventually Tatyana made her way into the room- through the front door:-) It was funny because one of the girls whispered "She's so beautiful".
