Chapter6

SIX

5:46 A.M., Saturday

Scully sat up abruptly in bed. She looked around and rubbed her eyes. She jumped when she heard the phone ring again. She grabbed at the table next to her and picked up the phone she held it to her ear and greeted it wearily.

"Scully."

"Scully, it's me. Get up, we have work to do. "

Scully glanced at her wrist watch ,"Mulder it's only 5:27, I just got up.." She groaned and rubbed her temples. Usually she was ready to go at a moments notice.

"Scully, are you Ok? I'll be at you house in a few minutes. I'm in a cab about 3 blocks from your apartment, oh and it's 5:47 or so, not 5:27, see, there's an extra 20 minutes." Scully could tell by his voice he was grinning. Scully sighed.

"Mulder, I'll unlock the door, let yourself in."

"Scully, that's not..."

"See you in a few minutes Mulder." She hung up the phone and got up. She arched her back and stretched out her arms. she walked over to her front door and unarmed the locks.

She walked back into her bedroom and closed the door behind her. She opened her closet full of assorted suits and pulled out a knee-length black skirt with a small slit in the back to ease walking, a short-sleeved white blouse, and a black suit coat. She changed into the skirt and blouse, hoping it wasn't as hot as the past few days had been. She remembered waiting for the weather report, and vacuuming the bed, but after that she couldn't remember anything from the past night. The event that in her mind happened right after putting the vacuum away was awaking to Mulder's phone call.

She had had a disturbing dream last night. It was very vague and choppy and she couldn't quite put a location as to where she was, or what exactly happened. She vaguely remembered the Cigarette-smoking man, whose name no one knew, leaning over her and focusing on her neck for something, whatever had happened in the dream, it disturbed her greatly.

She draped the coat over her arm and carried it into the bathroom. She turned on the water and quickly splashed the cool substance over her face and grabbed blindly for a towel. She dried off her face. The light pink terry cloth felt good against her tired skin. She turned around and rubbed the back of her arm, it felt like it was throbbing intensely and very sore, almost as if that day before she had done strenuous exercise on that one point of her arm. She looked in the mirror at point of pain and saw a large red mark.

She examined the mark closer with her medical expertise. There were two small darker spots in the middle of the bump. They looked like small fang marks. There were small scabs from the small amount of blood had come to the surface. She wondered what had made such and unusual mark on the back of her arm. She assumed it must be a spider bite. She didn't know of any poisonous spiders in Washington DC. She knew there were a few harmless breeds that couldn't leave a mark like that. She raised her eyebrow in question and heard her partner enter the apartment.

"Scully?" the familiar voice called.

"Mulder I'm in here," she answered back. Scully slipped her coat on, confused by the mark and opened the door of her bedroom to Mulder. She looked at him wearily.

"Hi Mulder, I think I'm going to need some coffee," she walked slowly into the kitchen and turned on her always- ready coffee machine. She pulled out two cups and set them on the counter next to the machine. She sat down on a stool. Mulder followed her and sat down on a stool that was placed on the opposite side of the island that separated the living room from the kitchen. He lifted her chin up.

"You Ok? Must have been one hell of a party." he said sarcastically. Mulder glanced at the dark circles under her eyes. Scully sighed and shook her head.

"I'm fine Mulder. As soon as I have my coffee, I'll be fine. Do you know of any poisonous spiders that live in this area?"

Mulder raised an eyebrow ,"No I don't, why?"

"Oh, just wondering, I think I got a spider bite, but I don't know of any that could leave a mark like the one I have."

"Let me see." Scully started to say 'no, I'm fine' but knew it would be pointless, in the end he would see it anyways, and she decided to save her energy. She pulled off her black suit coat and turned around, She lifted her sleeve slightly so he could see the whole mark. Mulder drew in a deep breath.

"That's one big spider......"

Scully craned her neck around to see Mulder ,"It's not that..." She saw the reflection of the mark in the toaster on the island,"....big..."

The mark had grown about twice it's size since she had last seen it, the bump seemed to swell with a liquid of some sort. She quickly pulled her jacket back on. Mulder looked at her now covered arm with intense worry.

"Scully you need to get that checked out."

Scully turned and looked him in the eye ,"Mulder I'm fine, I'm a doctor, remember? Now when do we have to leave for this case?"

"As soon as possible, what time is it?" Scully extended her wrist, showing him the time," 5:45? Scully that's impossible, I called you at 5:47"

Scully glanced at her watch ,"I always have this on the exact time. Always, so I'm never late. How could it just go slow overnight?" she questioned aloud.

"Maybe you were abducted," Mulder grinned and raised an eyebrow. Scully sighed. She turned around and looked at the digital clock on the stove. She reset her watch to 6:06 and would make it more accurate later. She got up and poured them both a cup of coffee. She inhaled the strong smell hoping it would help wake her up. She took a deep sip and handed Mulder his. She sat down again and set her cup down. She put her finger on her neck looking for the gold cross necklace that she often rubbed for comfort. She felt around but couldn't find it.

"Mulder, my necklace, it's gone," she said, puzzled. She stood up and went back into her bedroom. She looked at the bed, it looked like it hadn't been slept in. Scully frantically looked under the pillows and sheets and around the bed. She went in the bathroom and searched the floor and cabinets. She turned around and watched Mulder enter the bedroom and look under a few pillows.

"Come on Scully, we'll look for it when we get back, let's check out this case first Ok?"

Scully glanced around ,"I must be sick, first I loose my memory, then my time, then my necklace, maybe I've only lost one thing, my mind," she mumbled to herself. Mulder looked at her and hypothesized a what to him seemed like a logcical explanation, but it wouldn't be one she would like. He let his thoughts stay to himself and put a hand on the small of her back, guiding her out.

"Come on Scully. Let's go." Scully reluctantly went with him.
