September 6, 1998 - Aitken Centre, Fredericton, New Brunswick
As part of UNB's orientation week, Chantal Kreviazuk, with special guest, Emm Gryner, played to a well-receiving crowd. My sister and I arrived at the venue at abour 7:30 p.m. (it was to start at 8:45 p.m.). People had been lined up since 6 o'clock but there weren't that many people there yet, so when we FINALLY got in (about 8 o'clock) we were able to get REALLY awesome seats: fourth row, centre. I had smuggled in my camera so the great seats were an added bonus. Emm came on at 8:45 p.m. (finally, a concert that starts on time!) and played for thirty minutes with the last song being "Summerlong." She alternated between an acoustic guitar (that she had to borrow because she had lost hers on the flight) and a piano.
Then, at 9:45 p.m., Chantal came on stage. She started with this awesome song sung acapela. If I was not truly aware of the power of her voice before, I was now. It was just beautiful. She talked to us inbetween songs, telling us little stories. She tried a lot of newer material out on us and judging from the crowd, every song could be a hit. She even played a song she had just written while in Fredericton. After "Leaving On A Jet Plane," (for which she had the audience sing along - and let us sing the line "Don't know when I'll be back again" by ourselves) she stood up to go and the people just streamed forward. My sister and I ran up to the stage, along with many others, to shake her hand. Then she came back out because she was to announce the names of the people who won a car raffle. Then she played "Wayne," for which the people who rushed the stage stayed standing, so I got some even closer pictures of her. It was the most amazing show I've ever been to and I hope I get to see Chantal again on her next tour.
