After returning to England with Liverpool during the 1997 close season, having been with Inter Milan for the previous two years, the imposing central midfielder began to grow into the role of club skipper throughout 1997-98, toning down his impetuosity, and channelling his aggressive and competitive streak to the good of the team. A regular international, and proud to be in France with England's World Cup squad as we go to print, he scored an impressive eight goals for Liverpool during the campaign, including an equaliser against Everton, and two in the 4-0 win over Arsenal, both games being at Anfield. A midfield bundle of energy, he is both constructive and destructive in breaking up attacks and setting counter attacks in motion. Stop Press: Played in all four of England's World Cup games in France '98 and certainly enhanced his reputation with a battling display against Argentine. Down to ten men for 73 minutes, the side eventually went out of the competition following the penalty shoot-out, which saw both Paul and David Batty failing to strike the target.
