Articulate and intelligent off the pitch, Steve brings those same qualities to Liverpool and England when playing, and is reckoned to be a possible manager of the future. Continued to score brilliant individual goals in 1997-98, the one against Celtic in the UEFA Cup having all the hallmarks of this lively and dangerous old-fashioned winger.

A good dribbler, with close control and great balance, with the ability to go past defenders as if they do not exist, while some fans bemoan him being too much of an individual, his speed, and accurate shooting, which resulted in 12 goals, added to a high workrate, would make it difficult for any manager to leave him out. At the time of going to press, he was looking forward to helping England progress in the World Cup.

Stop Press: Called upon just once during World Cup '98 in France during the summer, Steve came on for the last 16 minutes of the first round, with the instruction to run at the Colombian defence, and that was that.
