He's faster than a speeding bullet and can leap tall buildings in a single bound. It's a bird, it's a plane...No! It's Joey dressed in his Superman costume. This must bring childhood memories to "Mr. Flirt's" mind because when he was very young, Joey would put on a cape and try to fly through windows. That's probably how he got about twelve stitches and eighteen butterflies, as before he was age five, little Joe was quite the accident-prone child. "The emergency room staff knew him by his first name!" Joe senior adds over a chuckle.
Other than visiting the doctor, Joey was found to be quite the entertainer. He couldn't be happier performing in front of an audience. At age three, Joey was putting on shows for his family and friends and when he was in kindergarten, he landed his first role in the play Pinnochio. "From that moment on," Joey explains, "it(entertaining) looked like a lot of fun. I thought it was the greatest feeling to get applause-to get to feed off the audience. i loved being onstage and watching people's faces." And that's where it all started.
Joey must have gotten his passion for performing from his father. Growing up in Brooklyn, NY, he was surrounded by both music and 
theater. his dad often performed in a little-known doo-wop band while he also ran theater groups in his churches. Once Joe senior saw the love of performing in his childres (including Joey's older sister, Janine, and younger brother, Steven), he immediately got them involved. Joey's first stage performance was in the well-known classic, Oklahoma! His mom Phyllis remebers "Tequila" as the first song he sang, (of course complete with his own dance routine!)
When Joey was thirteen, the Fatone family packed up and moved to Orlando, Florida, where Joey's career would go nowhere but uphill. It was in highschool where Joey really started thinking about his future. "I tried to pull in a little bit of everything-I was singing and dancing and acting...I used to do a lot of Shakespearean plays, musicals, and one-act plays in highschool." During this time, Joey was also scoring gigs in T.V. commercials, guest spots on T.V. shows like Seaquest DSV, and even landed a role in "Once Upon A Time In America" (where he got to work with his idol, Robert De Niro!)
After graduating from Dr. Phillips High School, Joey landed a singing and dancing part in Universal Studios "The Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue." Playing both Dracula and the Wolfman, Joey sang songs like "Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself" and "Hot, Hot, Hot". Joey had a lot of fun playing this part, along with working with his brother and sister who were also employed at Universal Studios.
However, the best thing that happened to him at Universal was meeting up with Chris Kirkpatrick. Little did they know that in the near future they would be teaming up to form NSYNC.
