Setlist
Reviews Guess it's my turn!!! Looks like everyone pretty much hit the
highlights of the show. One thing that happened that i thought was
funny, Steven asked the crowd "What would you do if you had an hour
alone with Joe perry???" then after everyone started screaming he said
"you can't have him!!" A few other things, I'm not sure if train will
stay on the setlist, it looks as if it was a last minute change. I'm
sure if the boyz felt it went well, they'll start with it again. Before
the show started the monitors said back in the saddle. I know during
the sound check they worked on train a lot. With this being the first
show of this leg, things were a little crazy, plus the new management
was there so I'm sure the boyz were a little nervous. Not to many
changes with the new management with the exception of meet and greets,
there's only a few planned for this leg of the tour and I doubt they'll
have many aftershow's because they'll be based most of the time. The
show started late last night because at the last minute they found out a
few people had been given meet and greets so they went ahead and did
one. The only bad thing about this for the rest of the crowd was they
had to cut Mama Kin from the encore. btw, did anyone really like Afghan
Whigs???? One of the guys looked like he was so stoned he didn't know
where he was!!! Another highlight! Steven started “I Don't Want To Miss
A Thing with the right words this time!! hehe and at one point when one
of the bombs when off it about knocked over a few people in the front
row, even Tom and Brad looked surprised
From what I seen the af1 seats were all pretty far back, all the people
I knew were in row 10 and some as far as 13 and 14. Did anyone get af1
seats up front? I know a lot of people were pretty upset. One friend
of mine that has been in af1 for a long time was in row 10 and he's
almost always in the first 5 rows. There were 3 sections on the floor
and the fan club seemed to be in the middle, center section. I'm hoping
this was just for this show and it don't have anything to do with the
new management. This might be a good question for someone to ask af1.
As of noon on Sunday, the semis carrying equipment were still in the
process of shuffling around the stage entrance, so we wondered if they
were late getting in. We cruised around in the car right next to the
stage entrance about noon and saw crew and truck drivers (having an Ohio
State President's Club pass for your car is a wonderful thing...a nice
perk of my job which also payed off for parking at the show).
The guys must have been late getting in since sound check didn't start
until about 6 pm. Not surprising since they would have been flying
through the storms going their direction, and flying directly into a
hellacious headwind. Bet they had a bumpy flight. In addition to what
Brian Elder already posted about sound check (Hi Brian...nice to finally
meet you!..you too Andi!) I also heard some snippets of Get the Lead
Out...not guitar parts, just rhythm section. The two run-throughs they
did of Stop Messin' were great, and when we heard SOS at sound check we
were really hoping they would be playing it. The people waiting around
us seemed totally oblivious to the fact that they were hearing
sound check! Doors didn't open until just a little before 7 pm which was
late for an 8 pm show.
As folks have already said, stage setup was the same with a small
variation in equipment. Tom had two Hartke cabs set up on Joe's side
(he's done this at a few other shows this tour too). Amps/cabs looked to
be the same, nothing new.
Afghan Whigs were bland enough, not obnoxious, but nothing special. Got
onstage late (about 8:15 or so) and played about 25 min.
During the intermission we saw the teleprompters turned on. With
binoculars we could read the teleprompter on the stage right extension,
and TRAIN was written in big letters so we knew there was a train a
comin'....
Super energetic show....what lacked in tightness at points was more than
made up for in energy, enthusiasm, and happiness. You could tell they
were happy to be back on familiar territory in front of an
over-appreciative crowd (as opposed to the Oscars...). Steven did not
wear a knee brace, but did have his knee wrapped under his pants. He was
a little conservative with it, but it didn't look like it bothered him
at all.
Fashion notes have already been posted, but all I can say is Mr Perry
looked mighty fine....
Guitar run-down: Onstage 9:23 pm
Train: Joe Gibson LP Black Beauty; Brad light green Strat (I believe
he's had this guitar since PV days); Tom brand new blue sparkle 4 string
Sadowsky Offstage at 10:58 pm.
What It Takes: back at 11:02 pm. Joe blue Telecaster; Brad acoustic; Tom
purple 4 string Off at 11:25 pm.
I wonder if some of the Joe Perry problems were related to his avoidance
of wearing ear monitors like the rest do. Tom did have two cabs set up
on Joe's side, so Joe should have been able to hear bass really well,
but one wonders how well he could hear Brad at points. A possible
explanation? Who knows, but in a way it's nice to see that they're human
and make mistakes too...Still a great show with way more energy than
I've seen in a while...maybe cleaning house of management etc gave them
a boost.
Joey didn't toss out any sticks, and Tom passed out a few fingers...I
keep hoping to get one, or maybe I should say "forsooth Tom...wither
thou goest? Giveth thine finger" oops there's that Shakespeare creeping
in again....
you can tell sleep hasn't been in abundance the last few days, he he !!
I have to add my comments to what has already been said about the concert.
First off, it was totally awesome! While there were a few minor glitches
(nobody but us diehard fans would of noticed), I thought Joe was in top
form -- he really gave it all on DTL and Stop Messin'' Round. Maybe it's me,
but I thought those were the best performances I've seen out of him! Of
course, he looked as hot as ever! Looks like he's letting his hair grow out
a bit, it was almost collar length. As always, I love to catch a glimpse
of
his pearly whites ...
Tom looked a bit tired, I thought. I didn't think he had the normal
enthusiasm and tons of smiles that I normally expect from him. A friend of
mine who was closer to the stage than I said that some college kids sitting
in front of her were mocking Tom and Brad. They kept screaming and waving
at them all the way through the show ... doing anything to get a response
from them. That sounds normal, but I guess it was overkill. She said she
thought Tom and Brad picked up on it after a while, maybe that's why Tom
didn't smile as much. But, on the plus side, I thought they were over on
the JP side more than normal (the side I was on), so I can't complain. It
did piss me off when she told me, though...
During DTL, right before Joe does his solo before 'collapsing' on stage,
Steven went back to Kramer. He grabbed a towel, wiped down his face, and
then fanned Joey w/it. Don't know if that was planned or not, but I thought
it was great. Also loved the drum solo he did later. Wouldn't it be neat
if they let each band member do a bit solo? I was surprised/disappointed
that Joey didn't throw out any sticks at the end of the show, though. I'm
always hoping to catch one! Tom did pass out 3 or 4 fingers, though.
It was great to see Steven playing w/no evidence of a brace on his knee.
At one point, he did a kind of 'bunny hop' across the entire stage. The whole
time, I kept thinking of his knee, praying that he wasn't overdoing it! :)
His outfit was sooooo neat! I loved the colors and the design on his pants!
All in all, a great show! I expected there would be a few glitches, this
being the first show and all. Steven at one point even said "You can tell
we haven't played for a few months!" But I really don't think it was that
bad at all.
Oh yeah, one more thing and then I'll shut up. Before Joe's part of the
show (I think), Steven kept saying "What do you want? Joe Perry? Joe
Perry? Joe Perry?" which of course brought the house down. Then he said
"You can't have him!" Sigh, if only it was that easy ... LOL!
I can't say the show was mistake free. They messed up big time on Train,
What Kind of Love are You on didn't sound that good. But those were the few
expected opening night lowlights. Draw the Line was awesome as usual, as
was the jam to lord of the thighs. All the messin around before walk this
way was cool. The opening set of Get Your Wings songs was so awesome
honestly they couldn't top that for me. They cut Mama King from the setlist
which they had posted as the opening song for the encore. And I couldn't
believe they didn't play anything from Rocks! Although steven did introduce
lord of the thighs as from rocks!
The stage was the same as it has been all 9 lives tour. pyros tonight and
all.
The merchandise was a little old a little new. They had an assortment of t
shirts with the new set of dates on them. Two of them just had the aero
logo and the dates on the back with the slogan "Try to Stop this Rock" on
top. There was a tshirt with the aero force one logo and the dates. a
couple with a pic of the band and the dates. They had the same old program.
All and all a great experience. Oh yeah security wasn't that tight and I
snuck my recorder in, if anybody is interested the sound is pretty good
other than I had some screamin' teenage girls in back of me. All I can say
is that if the boys work the kinks out this is a damn good show.
