Checking it Out
As she steped onto the pavment, she slamed the taxi door. While walking up the white steps she turned around and watched the taxi drive away untill she couldn't see it any longer. She rang the door bell and waited. It was a big house. 2 Stories, blue and white shutters and it even had one of those fancy door knockers.
"Hello darling Brittney." Her aunt Karen greeted her when she opened the door. "Come on in!"
"Hi aunt Karen" she said as she put her things down to hug her aunt.
The house was just as big inside as it was outside. She took a deep breath as she pulled away from her aunt.
"Well Tulsa may be different from NY, but I really think you'll like it here." she reasured Brittney. "Honey, why don't you go upstairs and get settled in. Your room is the 3rd door on the right."
Brittney walked up the blue carpeted stairs as she admired the house. " This is going to be a big adjustment " she thought to herself. She walked in the room " Oh my gosh, it's soooo big! I mean, I have my own bathroom and my own window seat" She droped her suitcases and went into the bathroom to check it out. " My own shower, cool!" She cam out of the bathroom and walked past the dresser as she noticed a note with Brittney on the front of it. She picked it up and opened it.
"Darling"she read "I know this is going to be a big change for you, so if you need anything just ask,ok? I hope you'll really like it here. Love your aunt Karen."
She folded the note twice and put it back onto the dresser. She walked over to the window seat. " What I view" she thought. " I can probably see the whole neighbourhood from this window." Brittney walked over to her suitcase and placed it on her bed.The first thing she saw was the most important. A teddy bear that her mother had given to her when she was in the hospital. She took the bear in her arms and walked over to the window seat once more.She sat down as she put the bear on her lap. "My mom is the whole reason why I'm here."
Brittney lived in NY with her mother and father in an apartment her whole life. She never knew anything more untill now. Her mother died about 6 months ago in a car accident. She had a hard time getting through it, but things started getting a bit better after awhile. Or at least untill her dad got layed off. He tried to keep things going but as a single parent without a job it just didn't work. He decided that it was in Brittney's best interest if she went to live with her aunt Karen for a while.Just untill things got straitened(sp?) up a bit. She was mad at first but then she just became sad. She had a week to say good-bye and gather up everything. The last thing her father said before she left was " I love you,i'll miss you, and you know before long you'll be back home." He hunged her and then she dissappered into the croud at the airport.
Brittney looked out her window. "My life has changed completey." she thought to herself. Out the window you could see kids running up and down the street playing untill thier mother came and got them in for dinner."It must be nice to have a big family, I wish I did ."
She squeezed her bear again. She was thinking of the time in grade 4 when she fell off the monkeybars and broke her arm, and how her friend Nicki came over and screamed " She's Dead!!! She's Dead!! and how all the kids came over and started poking at her to see if she was dead...... and how her mother stood by her the whole time she had to get her cast on.... and how her mom gave her the teddy bear as soon as she got home............ and how much she really missed her mom.
Brittney was just plugging in her keyboard and placing it on her desk when she heard her aunt yell "Dinner!" She went into the bathroom and washed her hands and then went down stairs. "Smells great! What is it?" she asked.
"It's just homemade spagetti" her aunt replied.
She picked up a mouth full and shoved it into her mouth. She wasn't really hungry for some reason, but yet she was still eating it. "Not bad!" she said licking her lips. "Do you want some help with the dishes?"
"No, that's ok sweetie, you just go and do what ever you want and nevermind these."
"Ummm, well, I was wondering if I could go take a look at the neighbourhood? Please, can I?"
"Well, I suppose... but don't go any father then Daley's convience store. I don't want you getting lost. Do you want me to go with you?"
"No that's ok, I'll just go by myself."
She put on her boots and her jacket and was just opening the door when her aunt yelled " Oh wait, could you do me a bit of a favour? Take the dog with you, he hasn't been out for his walk yet today."
"OK. Come on Tobi, we're going to go for a walk." She opened the door and got a breath of the cold air. "Come on boy, let's go check this place out."
