Backstreet Boys' new album shatters sales record Thursday, May 27, 1999
The Backstreet Boys are back...in a record-setting way.

The Orlando-based boy band has set a single-week sales record with its new album, "Millennium," which sold 1.13 million copies in its first six days on store shelves, according to SoundScan.

The million-plus week for "Millennium" surpasses the mark set by Garth Brooks last November with his concert record, "Double Live," which sold 1.08 million copies in its initial week in release. Publicists for the Backstreet Boys have said that their sales data indicates that over 500,000 people in the U.S. snatched up copies of "Millennium" on the first day alone.

After a week atop the album charts, Ricky Martin's self-titled new record slips to number two, but the Latin singer can take comfort in already having sold over 1 million copies of the album in only two weeks. Rounding out the top five are Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time," TLC's "Fanmail" and the "Star Wars: Episode 1" soundtrack.

Other artists and albums making noteworthy debuts on this week's charts include tropical troubadour Jimmy Buffett at number 8 with "Beach House on the Moon," Eightball & MJG's "In Our Lifetime, Volume 1" at number 10, Rawkus Records' "Soundbombing: Volume 2" collection at number 30, and the soundtrack to Disney's new animated film, "Tarzan," at 45. -- MTV.com
