"Okay everybody it’s 4:28, Sahar and Nick will be here any minute. Everyone find a hiding spot." Kevin announced. Everyone dashed for a spot. Amanda ducked into the hall closet and shut the door. All was quite and then suddenly she felt someone touch her arm. She opened her mouth to scream but a strong hand covered it.
"Shh, it’s just me."
"Brian," she hissed as he removed his hand.
"Yup."
"What are you doing in here?"
"Hiding same as you," he replied.
"well get out!"
"No I was here first."
"I don’t care Brian, get out before I scream."
"If you scream they’ll hear you."
"exactly, now get out."
"No!" She took a big breath ready to scream, when suddenly she felt Brian’s lips on hers. She should have been disgusted but for some odd reason she felt herself return the kiss. His lips were soft, gentle, and warm. It was unlike any kiss she had ever experienced. Suddenly she pulled away, "what in the hell are you doing?" she hissed. Brian sat there out of breath, saying nothing. Outside Amanda heard Nick’s voice, "I’m home."
Quickly she scrambled out of the closet, "Surprise Happy Birthday!!" everyone shouted Brian walked out of the closet slowly a very confused look on his face. Throughout the entire party Amanda avoided Brian. Besides casting him the occasional glare from across the room, she acted like he was invisible. The party was beginning to wind down and everyone that was left was dancing to some music. She felt a tap on her shoulder and someone whisper in here ear, "want to dance?".
"Please God, don’t be Brian," she prayed silently. She turned and saw it was Nick. She sighed a sigh of relief, "sure Nicky!"
"You look relieved," he commented as they swayed to the music.
"I thought you were Brian."
"Why do you hate Brian?"
She sighed, "I don’t hate Brian, I just don’t like him."
"Why, you never even gave him a chance." Nick asked.
Amanda closed her eyes, Nick was her best friend and he deserved the truth. "Let’s walk Nicky, and I’ll tell you." Nick nodded and they went outside. She sat down on the porch swing and looked up at the darkening night sky. She sighed again and motioned for him to sit next to her.
He sat next to her and slipped his arm around her shoulders, "Manda talk to me, we used to tell each other everything."
"That’s just it Nick, we used to tell each other everything, but now you tell HIM everything."
"Him, you mean Brian."
"Yes Brian, you used to come to me and we would solve your problems together then I’d kick your butt at Nintendo."
"Manda, we aren’t kids anymore. There are just some things I can’t talk to you about."
"Why?"
Nick laughed, "well in case you haven’t noticed, you my dear, are a girl. Some things I can’t talk about with you , you wouldn’t understand. I’m sure there is some girly stuff you and Sahar talk about that you wouldn’t talk to me about."
She was silent for a minute, "I guess, but I still don’t like him," she replied grumpily.
Nick shrugged and got up, "I’m going in, you coming?"
"In a minute." Nick nodded and went inside. As he walked in Nick didn‘t even notice Brian standing in the shadows. He had heard the whole conversation, and it had finally clicked why Amanda was so hostile towards him. Taking a deep breath he stepped away from the house and walked towards Amanda.
