Neil's Concert Reviews

Lots of good concerts coming up in the next two months in Calgary. Most notable is Radiohead with Spiritualized. Hopefully, I'll be able to have at least a complete set list for that one.

Concerts that I've seen

SPIRIT OF THE WEST , Thursday, November 27, 1997, Sparty's Lounge, Calgary, Alberta

Spirit of the West returned to Calgary last night in support of their new album, Weights and Measures. Although the new album featured heavily in the set, the band made sure to play the "chestnuts" as lead singer John Mann called them. Opening with the new Celtic stomper "Canadian Skye" the band seemed clearly focused. The set featured very little in the way of banter from the band, but this was made up for by some inspired performances. Highlites included "Political" and "...if venice is sinking", sung as a duet with opener Dayna Manning. Spirit of the West have long been one of Canada's greatest live bands. Last night's performance served to merely enhance that reputation.

Set List:Canadian Skye, Putting Up With the Jones, Our Ambassador, D for Democracy, Waking the Lion, Get Down Tonight, Five Free Minutes, Heavenly Angel, The Old Sod, Sadeness Grows, Goodbye Grace, if venice is sinking, Unplugged, Soldier's Boy, Political, Rites of Man, Scotland, Save This House, Home For a Rest
Encores: Far Too Canadian, The Crawl, An Honest Gamble

DODGY , Thursday, August 28, 1997, Max's Bar & Cafe, Calgary, Alberta

"This show is very special" was how vocalist Nigel Clark took the stage. Indeed the chance to see one of Britain's biggest bands in an intimate venue was a special occasion. After a short 35 minute set at the Edgefest Festival the previous day, Dodgy took this opportunity to play for nearly 90 minutes. Starting with a rollicking "In A Room" the band was clearly focused. While most of the material came from their most recent Free Peace Sweet album the band played several early UK hits including "Water Under The Bridge" and "Staying Out For The Summer". Also surprising inclusions in the set were B-sides "Big Brown Moon" and "High Horse". An incredibly satisfying show for a band that is truly destined for greatness.
