when we started
during the summer before their freshman year of highschool, aaron, dave, scott pastalove,
jon, jay and nick law were all getting ready unconsciously to be different parts
of the most amazing spectacle to face mankind since the druids. aaron had the intent
of starting a new band, since his grade-school band 'celery' had disbanded. He had
been writing a few songs with nick, nick would just sing and aaron would play and
try to sing. At this point, dave and scott had been playing together for a while,
writing some songs and all that. jon had been playing under the instruction of the
old jedi master known as bro dave, who is his father as well as drummer and wack
idea manufacturer, jon was the only one who knew jay at first. so on the first day
of high school, dave was wearing a primus t-shirt that prompted aaron to try and
recruit him for playing. the jiveturkey walks over to the space cowboy,( who at
that time, was an angry ragekornagnosticfront boy ) and tests his primus knowledge....
"hey man, Primus sucks"......."yeah, man". dave was ready to fuck aaron up, cuz
he was just a little wimp like he is now. but eventually, aaron started talking
to dave and arranged to get together for a jam. both brought an extra member with
them, aaron brought nick and dave brought scott. they played a song that aaron had
written the year before, with CELERY. Nick really didn't make it to too many practices
back then, cuz he spent the weekends at his dad's house. songwriting was hard to
do without a drummer, but they tried evrything, including a casio keyboard hooked
to a practice amp. during the beginning of the sophomore year, nick started talking
to this little jock kid who would always ask, "when can i play with your band?"
they would talk about the Doors and other hippie shit along that vein. so the first
time that the band, at that time named WILL, ever practiced with drums was at jons
house in his basement. jon took one look at aaron and thought, "what am i doing?",
knowing that he would be disowned by his jock friends for these activities. aaron
knew that the only thing to do with jon would be to reform him or kill him. lucky
for jon, everyone chose the former. so we started rocking out and writing some songs.
off and on, jay mcnew, the creator of this website, would play keyboards and some
guitar. different issues hit the scene and what ended up happening after many long
stories, was that nick left the band. aaron and dave started doing the lead vocals,
and since neither of them could sing, the band started to sound a little different.
it's easier to be punk when you don't worry about singing. WILL got kicked out
of the talent show at their high school for saying 'my mind is all fucked up' in
their song Simple Man. nick was still in the band at the point. soon after that,
the first of three classic shows at the ALPHA FIRE HOUSE was booked. WILL changes
their name to EXIT due to the leaving of Nick, which made it a totally different
band, since they changed all of the lyrics to the songs. EXIT set up the show, and
the only other bands in the highschool at that time were FLAK and PROZAC NATION.
all three bands played two sets, because their was way too much time for only three
bands. the next show had more bands and had abetter turn out. all of the bands
were from the area, though. the last of the trinity of the AFH shows featured Walter
Krug, who got frustrated because only their gurlfriends stayed to watch them. this
show was also the beginning of a long lasting friendship with Spunk Tank. they rock
the hee ows. also the weedwackers and fast. those shows were the definition of
an era that phillipsburg highchool won't soon forget. anyone who went to any of them
should thank jon for setting them up, because it was basically all him. any way,
they had recorded a tape that was called GOD SAVE THE SCENE. it had ten songs on
it and was crazy wild for little kids to do. about a year of school and little shows,
EXIT started to record a tape called beaver fever, when scott's girlfriend made him
leave the band. it was years later when he finally understood eddie murphy's warning
about the pussy trap. he woke up one morning not long ago and realized that he just
had regular old crackers. so they became a three piece. they eventually changed
the name a final time to EXIT3 in order to avoid legal difficulties with another
band named EXIT from ithaca new york. the only reason for the three on the end was
that aaron had a wierd ass story involving the mysticism of the number. it has nothing
to do with the band being a three-piece or phillipsburg being exit 3 off of route
78, which it is. any way, during the senior year of highschool for the boys, they
played a lot of local gigs and some gigs out in PA. they played with all types of
wack ass bands, way too many too name. they recorded the 6 song demo called amoretti,
which featured the new style that they had formed. they really liked what they had
been doing, and they are still developing it right now. amoretti had a song called
surrender which is about aaron's girlfriend, miss jessica, who basically straightened
aaron's shit the hell out. Open is a song about the philosophy of a young kid, and
was the favorite song of most of the people who gave it an honest listen. both of
those songs are going to be on the cd when it comes out, which should be soon. a
few months or so. so that's the exit3 story as far as i can see. this is long as
hell, but if you really wanted to know, then now you do. actually, i don't think
that i would even read this about my favorite band. ah well. it was really hard
to refer to myself as aaron and to refer to the band as they. that shit fucked my
head up like nobody's business. so who is going to be our roadies when we get famous,
which will be soon as hell because we are rock stars? ha. thanks again.
