Pessimism Strikes You Cold: Sandpit
Aus Music Scrapbook:
Sandpit, Sea Scouts, S:Bahn
Corner Hotel, Melbourne - Friday, 2nd of January '98
Unfortunately I missed S:Bahn after suffering a brain-lapse that made me think the gig was on at the Punters Club, something that probably happens to everyone at some stage. Despite that I do recommend you see them because they are a great band.
All the way from Tasmania was the Sea Scouts baring the line up of guitar, bass and drums. Musically they experimented with noise and feedback, on top of mumbled and shouting vocals all around one basic drum beat. They did have their interesting moments though you would either love or hate them. I would really need to see this band a second time for a better impression [or listen to Augogo's brill compilation Wonder From a Quarter Acre, which also includes s:bahn and (omigod, ohmigod!!) art of fighting and The Avalanches!!! - Andrew].
Sandpit put on great show, sounding more poppy and less noisy these days, giving a possible indication of the album. Brendan achieves some very catchy melodies with his different tunings, giving it a quirky lovable feel to it. Interspersed with moments of silence and tempo changes it produces some great songs. His vocals are brilliant, sounding honest and not overpowering. On the whole a band I think you should definitely watch out for.
