Her
mother Melanie who was good player in Czechoslovakia. At the age of six Martina`s Mother
divorced father Karol Hingis and then Martina and her Mother moved to Switzerland.
Martina won
her first major junior tournament when she won the French Open when she was only 12 and became
the youngest ever winner. She also won the Wimbledon juniors singles title.
She turned pro in
Zurich, Switzerland 1994 just days after turning 14. Her first W.T. A victory was against American
Patty Fendick. She made her first grand-slam tournament appearance in Australian at the 1995
Australian Open where she lost in the second round to Kyoko Nagatsuka. Martina`s first
grand-slam title was 1996 Wimbledon doubles which she won with Helena Sukova. Her first W.T.
A tournament title was in October at Filderstadt, Germay against Anke Huber. She not only won her
first title but a nice Porsche that she can`t drive yet. She then went on the have a fantastic end of
1996 reaching the final at Zurich but loosing to Jana Novotna, the a semi-final loss to Novotna in
Chicago, then her second W.T. A title winning in Oakland in the final against Monica Seles 6-2 6-0.
That saw her ranking go to #6 in the world a career high for Hingis. At the year ending Chase
Championships in New York Hingis lost in a great final to Steffi Graf. The score was 6-3 4-6 6-0
4-6 6-0.
Off the court Martina
enjoys Horse riding, rollerblading and shopping. Her favorite singer is Jon Bon Jovi but I hear she likes Alanis Morissette. WHAT A GIRL. Her favorite
food is chicken fajitaas.
Martina`s 1997 has been the best start to a year by any tennis player. She won the Sydney
International final against Jennifer Capriati, then her first grand-slam in Australian where she beat
former champion Mary Pierce in a one-sided match. Martina also won the doubles with Natasha
Zvereva to make her second grand slam doubles win. Then came Tokyo where Martina won the
title when Steffi Graf had to forfeit because of a knee injury or maybe she was scared ? No Steffi is
a great player and a great person and her knee injury, unfortunately is serious. Then at the Open
Gaze de Paris came another victory over Anke Huber 6-3 3-6 6-3. Already in Martina has
won four million dollars and become the youngest world #1 in history at only 16 years and 5 months.
Only a horse riding accident prevented Martina from kicking some more butt. When she returned from arthroscopic surgery on her knee she made the final of the Frech Open loosing to the lovely Iva Majoli for only her first loss of 1997.
Wimbledon was another great tournament for Martina. She beat Anna Kournikova thank-God. She actually whipped her butt. Martina reached the final when after a slow start she beat Jana Novotna. It was a nerve wrecking match but Martina showed her true class and won.
The U.S Open was another battle of the teen and thank-God Martina beat Venus. I couldn't stand seeing Venus win. Martina is the best player in the world right now and deserved to win.
That takes Martina's record to only three losses this year ( to Iva Majoli, Lindsay Davenport and just last week Amanda Coetzer ) which is no shame. Well done Martina.
