BANGLES

The Greatest Band In The World

Say,Where's Susanna?

Where were you when these ladies were popular? Well I can tell you that i was about seven years old in 1986, when the band was at their most popular. It wasn't till years later that I discovered the Bangles. 1995 to be exact. Sure I had seen commercials for those eighties colections that showed clips from "Eternal Flame," but I didn't bother back then. Boy, do I wish I had. If I had known about the Bangles earlier, I would have been able to see them live. However, by the time I became a fan, it was at least six years after they had broken up. No inkling of ever being able to see them....until  now...HOPE!!!!!
Like I mentioned above my love affair with the Bangles didn't happen until 1995. It was around the time that the remake of Bonnie Tyler's classic "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was on the airwaves. I was hoping to see the music video for the original on VH1's "Big '80's " program but was never treated to it, however I was able to have my eyes opened to many great Eighties artists like Rick Astley, Belinda Carlisle, Go-Go's, Bananarama, Phil Collins and of course, four lovely Californians named the Bangles. It took me a while to warm up to these gals, but I'm glad I did. The first Bangles songs I remember hearing on VH1 were "Manic Monday," "Walk Like An Egyptian" and "Hazy Shade of Winter." However, I had not heard "Eternal Flame" in full at that time. So my friend, Joe requested the song on our local light radio station. I fell in love with the song instantly. VH1 also once had a video countdown on four day weekends like Thansgiving. This is where I acquired my first Bangles item. My friend,
Jennie had never seen the video for "Manic Monday" before, so I volunteered to tape the Bangles portion of the alphabetical countdown. In that video, I got the videos for "Eternal Flame," "Manic Monday," "Hazy Shade of Winter," "Walk Like An Egyptian" and "In Your Room." That video was (and sometimes still is) played alot by me. So you can say that Jennie was the one who got me into the Bangles(though she oftimes denies it.) She never did see that video I taped. The next thing I did concerning the Bangles was on December 26, 1995, when I purchased a copy of Greatest Hits. Surprisingly, I didn't love it right away, I only listened to the five songs that I already had videos for. I had done a first listen to the whole CD, but didn't love it immediately. That would be something that would happen months later. I was up late one night watching the old VH1 show, "The Big '80's" and saw a video for one of the songs on Greatest Hits that I had never seen before. It was the video for "If She Knew What She Wants." The video showed all four Bangles  playing and being very friendly with each other. It was then that I saw the camaraderie that the four of them had and it was then that I fell in love with Susanna, Debbi, Vicki and Michael. I was a Bangles fan!! My Bangle Fandom has increased in leaps and bounds since 1995. The Bangles themselves helped me along as I got to meet Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson between 1997-2000.I even went so far as to fly out to California from September 20th thru the 24th just to catch the Bangles playing the House Of Blues on their Bangles 2000 tour.I only got to meet Michael Steele briefly but that was still an experience. The Bangles are it for me.I can't think of a band that I would love anymore than I love the Bangles.
