THE ALBUM THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

Lars Frederiksen:
Social Distortion, Mommy's little monster (Triple X, 1983)

"Asking what album changed my life is like asking where and with
whom i lost my virginity. The one record, though, that comes closest to
hitting the mark is Social Distortion's Mommy's little monster -it was
loud and punk. It was louder that any record i had ever heard; it was so
loud it almost scared me. I was about 11 years old and i was already
listening to Oi! Music, Black Flag and D.O.A., but nothing had that power
plus harmony which just hit me in the face. It was like seeing God. I
didn't have to have sex after that because i already knew what it felt
like after sitting in my room and listening to that record for the first
time.
Later, when i started playing guitar, Mike Ness became one of my
biggest influences because of his storyline solos, which are a song
within a song. He doesn't do twiddly Eddie Van Halen bits -i never got
into that shit, i always thought that was for dorks. I don't understand
that shit and it has nothing to do with punk rock anyway."
