Oasis Facts

A few people have asked what was said, so I will set out some of the "factlets" from the programme. There is way too much to transcribe-

Mother - Peggy Brother - Paul [manager of band called 'Performance']

Oasis name came from the club in Swindon of the same name. Noel was guitar tech for 'Inspiral Carpets' at the time and the band played there. He liked the name.

Noel met the Inspirals guitarist Graham Lambert at a 'Stone Roses' gig while Graham was taping their set. Noel went to watch the Inspirals shortly after that, and later auditioned for them as their singer, but did not get the gig. Audition was, coincidentally, the same day as the Pan-Am aircrash over Lockerbie, Scotland. Later he was asked to roadie, and became Graham's guitar tech on tour. He also stood in for Clint Boon (the singer) on some interviews, when Clint couldn't be bothered.

Noel: born Burnage(?), Manchester 29.5.67, Gemini. Supports Man City. First record was bought for him by his father: 'Show Must Go On' by Leo Sayer. First record he bought was 'Never Mind The Bollocks' by Sex Pistols.

William: born Burnage, Manchester 21.9.72, Virgo. Supports Man City.

Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs: born Manchester 23.6.65, Cancer. Supports Man United.

Paul 'Guigsy' McGuigan: born Manchester 9.5.71, Taurus. Supports Man City.

Alan White: born South East London 26.5.72, Gemini. Supports Charlton Athletic. Brother of Steve, drummer in the Paul Weller Band.

Interview with Peter Howard of Sifters Records who sold the Gallagher brothers records when they were young, and is mentioned in 'Shakermaker'.

Guigsy met Bonehead in a pub. They knew Tony McCarroll, and knew Liam could sing. Yheir first gig as a four piece was at the Boardwalk in Manchester. Noel saw it, and afterwards refused to act as their manager. He joined instead, and their first gig as a five piece was also at the Boardwalk in 1991.

They approached Factory Records of Manchester, got a long spiel about independent record labels from Tony Wilson (the owner and TV "personality") and were told they weren't wanted as they were "too baggy" - a reference to the then current 'Madchester' scene (Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Northside, etc.)

On 31.5.93 they went up to Glasgow to do a gig arranged for them by another local band 'Sister Lovers' intending to support 18 Wheeler (signed to Creation). They played early and happened to be seen by Creation boss Alan McGhee who loved a Noel "outrageous" guitar solo, and their version of 'I am the walrus'. Offered them a deal there and then.

Noel said of 'Live Forever' that he wrote it in the "middle of the grunge thing" when everybody was going around being depressed. He wrote it to piss people off, and it took him 10 minutes.

Alan loves Pasta. His favourite TV programme is Eastenders. Guigsy loves Rolos. He wouldn't give anyone his last Rolo. Liam's favourite person is himself. Bonehead loves Pickled Onion Monster Munches. Noel's favourite colour is brown, then black, then white.

They were deported from the Netherlands upon arrival on a ferry after a fight onboard.

They abandoned a gig in Newcastle after a fan punched Noel on the head with as metal ring during his guitar solo on 'Bring It On Down'.

They were banned from the infamous Columbia Hotel in London for throwing bottles out of the windows at the Managing Director's Mercedes Benz.

In Indianapolis they were drunk, and after abusing the driver of a Jeep at traffic lights, the guy got out with a gun and threatened them. They ran!!

'Cast No Shadow' was written on an acoustic guitar on a train while Noel was going down to the studio in Wales for recording.

Bonehead was 30 on the day they played Glastonbury in 1995, and the crowd sang Happy Birthday to him.

Scott McLeod filled in for Guigsy on the US tour last 'fall. He had been in old-time Oasis mates 'Ya-Yas'. After Pittsburgh, he just told them he didn't want to go on and returned to the UK. After the rest of the band returned home, he rang them and said he had changed his mind and wanted to rejoin.

The remainder did Letterman with Bonehead on bass.

Noel and the band said good luck to Mike Flowers when they heard his easy listening version of Wonderwall. They fell about laughing, and thought it was great.

Noel received his Rolls Royce at the Creation Christmas 1995 party at the Halcyon Hotel.
