M.E. Jones, Vocals/Percussion

Well, since I'm the author of this page,
I'll go ahead and tell my story from my perspective. Just to clear up any
confusion, my full name is Mary Ellen Jones. I was born Mary Ellen Ingvalson,
for the benefit of any old friends who may wander here.
My good friend Gnarly, who was one of our first band members, first gave me the nickname M.E. (pronounced emmy). I decided that I really liked it and so did others, so I kept using the name. I have always enjoyed singing, as long as I can remember. I was in the elementary school choir. I remember our group singing "Blowing In The Wind". I wasn't an extrodinary singer; I only remember loving the experience. I was first asked to sing in public with my now good friend, David Meadows, at his sister's wedding in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. I was there as the guest of Angela, the sister of the bride, who has been my friend since elementary school. We practiced and practiced that weekend, "The Wedding Song". |
And so it began. We performed again, this time with background music, at the reception that was held in the States. David and I bacame fast friends and karaoke buddies. Angela was the first to introduce me to karaoke, a form of entertainment I recommend for all! Angela took me to the Blue Dog Saloon one night and I very bravely, but very badly, sang "These Boots Are Made For Walking". It would've been better if I actually knew the whole song, not just the chorus! The next time I tried karaoke, I was better prepared. I was also hooked! | ![]() |

In my travels from pubs to restaurants, looking for the
best karaoke, I met Alan Colvin, who was running a karaoke show in a local
pub. We became fast friends, with a mutual love and enthusiasm for singing
and performing.
At the time, Alan was working with the band Licking Post and I was anxious to try singing with a live band. I was very fortunate to be asked to be a guest singer at many of their shows. It was a thrill for me to jam with this group of very talented guys: Fred Gillum, Steve Reppert, Paul McDermott, and of course, Alan Colvin. The members of that group went their separate ways, but Alan and I vowed to start a new group. I began writing lyrics and Alan wrote the tunes. Alan already had many songs written and recorded. |
We began to build a list of original material that would soon be
performed by our new group, "Acoustic JAM". Acoustic JAM was
inspired by the acoustic band, "CommonBond". I had seen this
two woman band many times, as one of the members was a childhood neighbor
of mine.
Joined by Joe Leger, Alan and I were enthusiastic about our new project. |

Well, Acoustic Jam was short lived. We played a few gigs and then
decided to stop playing together due to the fact that Back Ally Jones was
getting busy!
Since the beginning, I have had the feeling that Back Ally Jones had something special. I began music and voice lessons about a year ago and realize now how much I have to learn about singing. I am inspired by many of the female artists of the 90's, but my favorite artist is Melissa Etheridge. We cover a bunch of her songs, as well as songs from Alanis Morsette, Bonnie Raitt, No Doubt, and Meredith Brooks. We even play the classic Janis tune, "Piece of My Heart". Quite a long winded bio for such a short singing career. I will close by telling you that I am having the time of my life. I hope that someday soon we'll record our own music and have a shot at the big time! |
