Alright,
this section of my page is going to be used for YOUR
INPUT! What exactly does that include? Well, anything that
you want to send me that has to do
with Oasis, basically!! It could be poems, stories, accounts
of dreams about the band, editorials, your opinion on a particular
issue surrounding the band, drawings of the
boys (I don't have a scanner so you'll already have to have
them on the net), anything you like, really!!
Lately I haven't received very many submissions so what I've decided to do until things pick up is post various e-mails from the Whatever mailing list that I have found to be creative or insightful. So, what are you waiting for? Get those creative juices flowing and send me your entries!!! Please send all submissions to Jessica
The following posts were all sent to the Whatever e-mail list in response to the questions posted by Shari *
When/where/how did you first hear about Oasis & what did you
1) Both my friend and i were die-hard Beatles fans at the time. One night she calls me up: "I just discovered this great new band. They're influenced by the Beatles!" Wonderwall was playing in the background, but I didn't pay that much attention to it. A couple days later she sat me down and showed me the vids for Morning Glory and Wonderwall, which she had on tape. I hated MG, but I liked Wonderwall. She started hating Oasis by the time the vid for CS came out, but here I am. 2) I actually bought WTSMG and DM together after a little more exposure from a different friend. I basically heard all of the two albums except for Slide Away and Married With Children and was really into four songs off each album before I bought anything. This friend was done with Oasis by late '96. Reply By: Beth I first
saw Oasis on MTV and it was the Wonderwall video that was on but
they were doing that
thing when you can email in what you think about the
video and I was paying more attn. to that then I was the video.
Then later that night
[really late] they had on a show and I belive it was
called "Shopping with Oasis" but it was really late and I was
The first album I got was Morning Glory but I remember the night I went out to buy it I was with my dad and he had no idea what I was looking for, so I went wandering around the record store looking for an *album* [I don't belive in singles] by a group named Oasis with a song called Wonderwall on it. So after quite some time of searching I gave up and went home. Later that night I invited a friend over and they brought over Morning Glory. I freaked out. I was wild but then my dad said something like "Oh, that was the album you wanted. Well that was right up front on the display." I was thoroughly P-Oed by this and screamed "You knew and you never told me!!" in a rather anguished voice. *Somewhat* funny looking back on it now. Reply By: Laura I first heard about Oasis on Muchmusic when the whole 'Wonderwall' hype was going around (keep in mind I was a total grunge follower at the time). I kept telling myself how much I hated them, but I really didn't. You know that feeling. Don't tell me you didn't think that Mmmbop was 'catchy' when you first heard it. Anyways, I first heard Wonderwall, didn't want to follow the hype so said I hated Oasis. Next came Champagne Supernova, which I genuinely loved, but didn't want to say. Then came Don't Look Back in Anger, and I finally realized that this is the band for me. I dropped all my grunge loving ways and moved on to listening to good music. First Oasis album I got was WTSMG. It was the first day my local HMV opened. I went home and listened to it and fell in love. Reply By: Meg Well some kid at school that I sat near in class was always singing "Wonderwall" but at that time I had never heard of Wonderwall or Oasis. It really annoyed me when he sang that song. Once I asked why he sang it all the time and he said "Cause its such a great song!" I was like "OK". When I saw the "Wonderwall" video on VH1 I loved the song! At first I didn't know it was the same song as the one the kid was singing. When I heard the lyrics "and maybe you're gonna be the one that saves me" I knew where I had heard it before and thought: that kid was right about it being such a great song! So the next day I bought the album "(What's the story)Morning Glory?" and loved every song! Reply By: MaccaNuTz@aol.com I first
heard about Oasis in Teen magazine. I remember I got it in the mail
Reply By: Mike The first time I saw Oasis was on MTV and it was the Don't look back in Anger Vid. I like the song so much that I started pining away at the tv waitin for MTV to play it again. But for some strange reason they never did. Then one day I went to my friends house and he started playing these casettes he had bought for Christmas. Suddenly Stand By Me came(apparently he had bought the Be Here Now album) I fell in love with it. And like the avid Guitarist and Oasis fan that I am I got my guitar and started interpreting all the songs on the BHN album. And to this day I still do it. I know all the TABS for all the songs on WTSMG?, BHN, and DM. Reply By: Ryan i'm
glad that these questions came up, because i like to think about this
i think the album came out right at the end of august '94 (30th or 31st), and i know i didn't get it much later than that. the whole album was really good. then i saw in a select magazine that it was voted album of the year. that was the first time i had heard about their being so big in england. i had no idea how popular they were. then i started collecting articles and pictures and whatever i could get a hold of. i had never been so passionate about a band before, i felt like they were mine. then the next summer i was listening to the radio and heard some might say, though i turned it off at first because i didn't know it was them, but i knew i recognized the voice and guitar playing, so i turned it back and sure enough it was them. i listened to that station for the next day and a half, almost non stop, for it to come on again so i could tape it. then, one day i went into this indie record shop, went straight to the oasis section, and i couldn't believe what i saw. loads of oasis singles on import, which i had never had access to before! i was thrilled. i bought the some might say and cigarettes & alcohol singles to start with, since that's all i could afford. i was amazed how good the b-sides were. the singles i was missing was all i bought after that, i had to get them all. i can't possibly explain how exciting this time was for me, getting this abundance of new songs that i knew existed but didn't know how to get them. then i got the thrill of anticipating new single releases, starting with roll with it. then (what's the story) morning glory? came out and didn't disappoint, and so on and so on. it's basically been non-stop for me since. i discovered this list, which has helped satiate my need for bootlegs and information, and i can honestly say that i have never gotten tired of them or swayed in my opinion of them over the past four years. and though i don't think i'm better than anybody else because i maybe heard of them before others, i consider myself extremely lucky for stumbling onto them as early as i did. it just makes me feel really good to know i've been with them for four years and i'll be with them for the next forty four years or however long the rest of my life is. i'll be surprised if i ever feel the same way about another band. Reply By: Edilson I heard about Oasis for the first time in a radio, the guy in the radio said that this new band called Oasis was one of the better new bands of England and played "Wonderwall", well I remember that I feel like I found something special in this music until now all the times I heard "Wonderwall" I got that feeling inside me. My first Oasis album was a bootleg named "Behind Closed Doors" from KTS, my brother give to me in my anniversary in the same week I go to the Shop of Cds and bought "Definetely Maybe" and "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?", that I heard 24 hours for at least one year until come "Be Here Now", Now I heard DM 6 hours, MG 6 hours and BHN 6 hours, the rest of time I heard my bootlegs and my singles ;) Reply By: Shakermaker I first heard about Oasis when I heard 'Wonderwall'. I had never really listened to the radio before then,so I wasn't around to hear "Supersonic" and all those other earlier singles. When I heard it though, I was amazed at how perfect a song could be. So I ran out and got the album. I was suprised because I liked the whole thing, and normally I only like one or two songs on albums. The first album I got was Morning Glory...and I *think* the first single I got was ''Some Might Say". Reply By: Trisha The first time I heard Oasis I had just moved to a really crappy place (I won't meantion where because I'm not sure if anyone lives there.) Anyway I didn't really listen to MuchMusic and the music I did listen to was shit. I was in a really bad situation at that point in my life and I just hated everything about myself and other people. I was in my room at about 11.00pm and I reading with the t.v on. I don't know why but it was on Muchmusic (I usally didn't watch Much) and out of nowhere Wonderwall came on. I don't know what happened to me but I put my book down and started to listen to it very carefully. I was totally blown away. The lyrics were so meaningful, the music was great and the singer had this voice that I couldn't ignore. Right away I knew that I loved them and I had to find out who they were. I didn't know who they were because nobody I knew liked them and I wasen't a big music fan. The name Oasis came up and I had to know more about them and buy their album. I don't know why but had to buy their album (I usally make myself listen to more then one song before I buy and album.) I got a drive back to Toronto because for some reason I didn't want to buy the album there and went straight to Music World. Two c.d's were under Oasis but I wanted the one with Wonderwall on it. I picked it up and bought What's The Story Morning Glory?. I loved it! After that I bought Definitely Maybe and I bought all the Oasis merchandise I could afford. Now I love tons of music and Oasis is my favourite band. Reply By: Roi 1. I was doing my O-Levels and during my exams there was this song that kept coming in my mind all the time, it was Whatever. Well I just loved that, but not enough to like the band. Then when SMS and RWI came out, I became a real Oasis fan. So from the other responses I have read till now, am I the only one who got to like Oasis not just from Wonderwall ?? 2. Definitely Morning Glory. Wanted to get it for the SMS song mostly (though I had thought that Whatever was on that album too !). I was a bit reluctant on getting Definetely Maybe, since I didn`t know the songs on it except LF, but after getting it I was quite pleased in having done so, since it made me become a bigger Oasis fan. Reply By: Eve One night late on the radio I heard Live forever and I fell In love with the song . Of course since it was 2 in the morning , there was no DJ so I didn't know who it was by . About a week or two later I heard Wonderwall and I'm like ' hey this is a good song ' . Of course then I found out it was Oasis , and so that sparked my interest in them. Even though at the time I thought Noel and Liam were twins ! They look so much alike in the Wonderwall video , right ? But I have this thing about not buying a CD after hearing only one song since I might not like it . Then Champagne Supernova was played on my local radio station and I loved it so much I cried . They didn't say who it was so I called up the station to find out who it was by , and they said ' Oasis '. I went out the next day and bought WTSMG? . Then a week after this point in time I heard Live Forever again on the radio but this time it was around mid-night so I found out that it was by Oasis . Of course me thinking that WTSMG? was their only album I was a little confused . The next time I went into a record store which was about a month after that I went to the Oasis section and saw DM , I bought it right away and loved it, played it continuously , worrying at the same time if you could break a CD by listening to it too often like you can with a tape . But yet it is still here and I still love Oasis . And will (hopefully) until the day I die Reply By: Lindsay well, hmm the first song that i ever heard was Wonderwall. I even remember when i first heard it! man i'm wierd. It was at night and I was going to bed, and i was listening to the Q107 top ten at ten ( toronto people should know this) and anyway. this amazing song came on (wonderwall) and i just stopped and listened to it. I think about a few weeks later i went and bought WTSMG, which also happened to be the first cd i ever bought with my own money. I loved it, still do, and i think i listened to it bout seven times in a row that day. (yes you can call me crazy) from then on i was hooked! The more i think about it, the more details come back... that night on muchmusic they showed Live By The Sea (is that what it's called?) and i remember watching it. Reply By: LesCheeba@aol.com I started liking Oasis when I saw the video for Live Forever. I saw it and said, wow finally someone is out there doing something different. I then saw an interview with Noel on MTV where he was saying that being a rock star was great and people who say it isn't are lying. He went on to say that people like Eddie Vedder should be working in MacDonalds cause being a rock is the best thing in the world. At the time Pearl Jam was one of my favorite bands, and I normally would have written off some newcomer ripping on one of my favorite bands. But with that comment Noel Gallagher and Oasis won my respect and I figured anyone who could finally say what everyone was thinking about bands who didn't want to become popular would have an awesome album. And they did. And when Wonderwall finally came out here in the states and Oasis started to get popular here, I worked in a music store. We played What's the Story Morning Glory twice a day (sometimes more) every day for a year and a half until I finally took the promo home. Reply By: Ariana Ok
I have enjoyed reading other peoples stories about how they got into
Reply By: Caesar1776@aol.com I first head Oasis on Vh1 (yeah, I know I'm ashamed) with Champagne Supernova. You see, I was totally modern music ignorant at the time, and I was switching through the channels. I saw Noel playing guitar and said "Hey, that guy looks like me". Then I heard the song, and the rest is history. Reply By: Whitney For me I was driving over to this girls house to have lunch back in early summer 95 and I heard this song (live forever) on the radio that I had heard a couple of times before but when I heard it this time I thought, my God this song is unbelievable. So I went had lunch went back to work and called the radio station and requested the song. I requested it at sometime around 2:00 p.m. I then proceeded to wait by the radio with my tape recorder ready until 6:30p.m. when they finally played it again. Shortly thereafter I was at the record store debateing wherther I should buy Depeche Mode (violator) or Oasis. Well, I walked up to the counter with Depeche Mode and just before I was supposed to pay for it i changed my mind and got Oasis, and have been a fanatic ever since. Reply By: Alyssa I've ALWAYS been into the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Sex Pistols, etc., etc., and for the longest time that's what I mainly listened to. I mean, I'd turn on the radio and listen to some new music once in a while, but for the most part I'd just turn it off and think, "You know, there's got to be some better music out there...." But then I heard Champagne Supernova and I was immediately hooked (I wasn't too into Wonderwall, believe it or not....) After doing some reading up on Oasis, I found out that I was into a lot of the music that influenced Oasis as a whole, and that just made me love them even more. Also, being a guitarist, I fell further in love with Oasis' music after hearing Noel's acoustic Morning Glory from the There and Then video - it really encouraged me to get even more into playing the guitar, and I even started playing with a band and everything :o) I don't know if this has been asked before, but is there anyone out there who has been inspired by Noel himself (or even Oasis in general....) to pick up an instrument and start playing, or even to try to start a possible career in the music business? Talk amongst yourselves.... :o) I almost forgot: The first Oasis album I bought? Well, I bought both Definitely Maybe AND (What's The Story) Morning Glory? at the same time. :o) Reply By: Sarah I think
I first heard about Oasis when I heard the Wonderwall single which was
big out here (Australia) at the time. And if you knew me, you'd know that
if I like just one song off an album, I'll go and buy it, so I bought WTS(MG).
I loved Oasis, they were my introduction to British music and have definately
started me on the track to what I want to do with my life (become a music
journalist). They started my obsession with music in general.
