The setlist is only right for the first few, then I completely forgot it as it all became a whirlwind of rock emotion!
I was thinking of sneeking a tape recorder into the Norwich show, to keep as a souviner for myself and I regret not doing it now, they did a nigh on two hour set with 17 songs (I never known a band to do this many before). And were far and away the best band to come to Norwich for a while. Heard Delakota from the bar, they weren't bad but they weren't particularly great either, I didn't think much, apart from how the lead singer looked like that bloke from Kula Shaker!
Embrace came on stage and ripped into Blind, which works better live than it does on CD. The setlist was similar to Glastonbury. As with The Good Will Out, Embrace live, is an experience, you have to be there, otherwise you wouldn't believe that you could go through so many emotions in one night.
Retread was amazing quite simply amazing, it must be a fairly difficult song to sing live but Danny pulled it off like an old pro!
Richard did an amazing version of The Way I Do and at the time I'd never heard it and it completely blew me away - It was played quite differently to how it appears on AYGGP, I think it was mostly made up of Richard and Micky Dale on Keyboards, but it had an amazing soaring guitar solo at the end and Richard was in fine voice.
Someone shouted out during the quieter moments that Danny was ''A Liam Gallagher wannabe'' to which Danny replied ''No I'm not, I'm Danny McNamara me, It's me up here not Liam'' Then he said ''Right for that I'm gonna play you a new song which was finished about a week ago'' The song was brilliant, just Danny on acoustic if my memory serves, similar to Fireworks. When he'd finished he said ''Where's the Liam Gallagher in that?'' which then raised one of the best shows of appreciation and cheering that night.
Norwich UEA is a small venue, holds about 1200 and is really good for seeing a band as the sound is tight, very intense and has good acoustics, for me Embrace were ten times better than when I saw them at Glastonbury, largely due to the venue, however I'm not saying they were poor at Glastonbury - they were certainly a highlight for me at Glastonbury.
Overall the highlights of Embrace's set at Norwich for me, were One Big Family, I Want The World, the excellent Retread and The Way I Do.
One day Embrace are going to fill Wembley and really bring it on down, they showed a great level of maturity, coupled with the appropriate "indie" swagger. We can all look forward to the next album and even if they only match The Good Will Out then it is still gonna lay claim for "album of the year", having said that I'm sure the boys will come up with the goods.
Best debut of the decade? A resounding YES!!
