Ok, at first glance of this movie you are probably thinking " How can it possibly earn four stars. Well this movie is full of surprises. Not only does it result in Julia Roberts' best performance to date, it gives us a star-making, hilarious performance by Rupert Everett who steals every scene he is in.

My Best Friend's Wedding overturns every cliche in the romantic- comedy genre. Roberts is luminous in a wonderful performance as the ever scheming Juilanne. She is believable as she lies and cheats in trying to steal Michael(Mulroney) away from Kimmy (Diaz). One of the best aspects of the film is that they make Kimmy a likable and smart character as opposed to the usual fiances movies produce. The love Kimmy and Michael share appears real as is the love between new best friends Julianne and George(Everett).

The on-screen chemistry between Roberts and Mulroney is fine, best represented when he serenades her on a boat, but the great, true chemistry is between Roberts and Everett as friends/soul-mates. They have a perfect loving relationship without the possibility of romance and sex being an option to spoil everything.

There are occasional scenes in My Best Friend's Wedding that are destined to become classics on video, with the taxi scene, restaurant sing-a-long, and surprising dance at the end springing to mind. If I had to sum up this film in one word without using "great", the only word that pops up in my mind is charming.
