To say that this film was a 'slick thriller' would be an
understatement.
Masterfully directed by an immerging star in David Fincher (Seven),
'The
Game' in essence treats us to a game just like it does to Nicholas Van
Orten
(Michael Douglas). Our game is a jigsaw puzzle that the opening
credits so
deftly place in our minds that we, as the character, must figure out
what is
happening and what the objective to the rather sadistic game is of
which
Douglas feels he is only a pawn in. Thus, Fincher takes us down a
similar, yet
wildly different path, in that he presents another character whose
life is
dominated by control and order in Van Orten (as was the case with
Morgan
Freeman's character in 'Seven') and who is subsequently thrown into a
world
of chaos and disarray.
Fincher does a great job at this melding of
order in
chaos in this film, which also shows his range because, contrary to
belief,
'The Game' is much different than 'Seven.' The film essentially is a
game in
itself, one that we must try to figure out, as Douglas' character
attempts to do
throughout most of the film. Sean Penn's character is okay, but
Deborah
Unger's character is downright cool. It is Douglas though who truly
gives the
game its dramatic quotient with his 'throw him in an extreme
circumstance
and you get an extreme response' knack that he displays so well in many
of
his other more notable films. Basically, 'The Game' boils down to
Douglas
discovering if what he is in is a game or something else, what is
real and
what's fake, and, consequently, what's fun and what's not? What
Douglas
discovers in the ending, which was rather good though possibly could
have
been better maybe, is that this sick and twisted game could very well
indeed
make his life fun or tragic (I aint gonna give it away) and as one
person told
him, "I once was blind but now I see." Once this film is over, the
audience
will feel the same way.
