Going into this film I must say I wasn't expecting alot since Demi
Moore's
most recent films have been rather unwatchable, yet I was willing to
take a
look at this film due to the immense talents of Ridley Scott (Aliens)
even
though I will forgive for 'White Squall.' Demi Moore plays the
character
Jordan who must prove she's worthy of being a Navy SEAL if others are
to
tread in her path. Thus, she is from the beginning set up on a pedestal
that the
whole state of the military as it relates to women in combat is
ultimately riding
upon her. For Jordan, shaving off her hair is a way of demanding to
be
treated as a another grunt and to not be judged due to her gender.
Moore
goes for the down-and-dirty rugged look that she seems to be able to
pull of
rather deftly, what with the hoarse voice and the seeming inner
strength that
she brings to this character. The film though basically tries to
glorify a
somewhat "I am woman..hear me roar" attitude as a battle-cry to the
military.
Thus, Jordan undergoes the hellish rituals of the Navy SEALs, a
torturous
regimen that will break even the strongest person. Along with the
male
recruits, Jordan does push-ups in the ice-cold surf, crawls through the
mud,
eats food out of the garbage, gets punched, kicked, shot at, almost
raped,
but yet keeps on fighting.
This is an old story with a new twist.
It's like 'An
Officer and a Gentleman' except Demi Moore ain't Richard Gere and she
isn't going to go picking up some guy in a factory. Basically the film
through
its torturous portrayal is trying to show that if women and men are to
ever
consider one another equal, they must both be able to do the exact
same
things, both mentally and physically. The film isn't really tredding
on any
uncharted waters though, and it is too bogged down into making sure
that the
notion of female resilience is pushed up toward Olympian proportions.
