I'm very sorry folks. I was expecting Corey to do this but he didn't so here's
a review. (Corey probably will not be doing anymore reviews unless he can
fit them within his schedule which I understand can get hectic). 'LA
Confidential' is a very engrossing, character-driven piece set in 1950's LA
(obviously LA). It shows a seedy underbelly to LA that is very prevalent
now, but was masked really well during the 50's by the glitz and glamour that
is supposedly Hollywood (I've been to Hollywood and it aint too glitzy!).
Anyway for a studio film, and especially for a Warner Bros. film which hasn't
had many big critical hits lately, this film is amazing.
The direction is astute
and gives close attention to every detail. The story is really good and very
twisting (some things you can figure out, others you can't or at least not in the
right way). The thing that makes this film however is the performances by this
marvelous cast. Whoever was casting director for this film deserves a raise
for a stupendous job. The brightest star in this great ensemble cast has to be
the very talented (and highly underrated)Russell Crowe (Virtuosity). Crowe
plays Officer White, a kindly bruiser (I guess that sorta qualifies for an
oxymoron, don't it?) who, for one brief moment, thinks before he acts. His
character, with the exception of Lt. Exley, played superbly by Guy Pearce
(Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), is probably the most mulit-faceted one in the
film, though that is what gives the film its allure; each of the characters are
fairly well-developed.
The only drawback to the film could possibly be that
the ending is rather predictable, yet I highly recommend seeing this film, even
if you are not a big fan of 'cops and robbers' films.
