'Mimic' is basically a souped-up B horror movie about giant
cockroaches
that have the ability to "mimic" other organisms and of course live
in the
sewers of Manhattan. Now that the premise has been presented, maybe
it
can shed light on how silly this concept is, yet also how fun it could
be. This
film is somewhat like its Dimension counterpart 'Scream' in that it
steals many
things from various movies, yet it is not trying to almost parody
itself like
'Scream' did so expertly. They leap about an abandoned subway station
with an eerieness similar to that of 'Alien.' Supposedly, the children
of New
York are contacting a deadly virus carried by bugs and Mira Sorvino,
an
entomologist, saves the day by creating a powerful new strain of mutant
bugs
known as the 'Judas Breed.' Anyway, they "mimic" humans and presto you
have your creepy-crawling baddies. Now I could care less about bugs,
but
when they're the size of Mack trucks then I start getting worried.
The film
does provide enough suspense and scares to keep you on the edge of your
seat, but the film is rather bland and generic when it comes to the
horror
genre. The director, Guillermo Del Toro, however does an excellent job
in
knowing audience manipulation because many of the scary elements of
the
film seem to have been done with pinpoint accuracy. Sorvino opts to go
for
the scream-queen role in this film and basically if you go see 'Mimic'
expect
that it is in essence your typical scary movie.
