The silence of space is about to be shattered.
The last scream you'll hear will be your own...
On the planet Sirius 6B, in the year 2068, the most precious resource in
the known galaxy was discovered -- Berrynium. The company known as the
New Economic Block, or NEB, was mining the metal when it was discovered
that underneath the Berrynium were huge amounts of lethal radiation
which mining was releasing. Many workers refused to mine the material
and a war was started between the NEBs and the new union called the
Alliance on Sirius 6B. Now, in the year 2078 after the decade-spanning
war, Alliance scientists have created the perfect weapon -- the
autonomous mobile sword, affectionately known as a screamer -- a
robotic, self-replicating, blade-weilding subterranean killing
machines. The screamers sense a living creature's heartbeat and
obliterate the living creature, and only Alliance members are safe
because of an armband that transmits their heartbeat one-step out of
phase, flatlining them. Unfortuneatly for everyone, the screamers have
become a little too smart. They've learned to evolve without any human
guidance and now it has devised a new mission: obliterate all life.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. The story-line is so
complex that you can watch it over and over again and see different
things in it that you never picked up on before. Peter Weller, an
underrated actor in this underrated movie, puts on an incredible
performance as the clear-headed, rough-and-tumble Commander Joe
Hendrickson, who, upon learning of some appalling information, travels
across the frozen wasteland to make peace with the NEBs. Rarely do you
see locations like this in a movie which is why it's such a treat. The
special effects are amazing, and all-in-all the movie is a
science-fiction masterpiece.
Screamers has a sweatty-palms kind of suspense element to it, although
there is comedy, horror, intrigue, adventure, action, drama and romance
all within the storyline, which makes it nearly one-of-a-kind. The
screamers themselves evolve at a computer's pace, learning advance their
shape to become more deadly, and eventually learn to take on human
form. Now you can watch the movie dozens of times, everybody possibly
having a different opinion on who's a screamer and when in the movie.
This is a top-notch sci-fi masterpiece - the kind that you'll want to
watch again right after it's over.
